Madison Ice Muskies News Release
Behind 32 saves from Nick Niedert, the Ice Muskies shutout Evansville 6-0 Saturday night in front of 950 fans at Hartmeyer Ice Arena to earn three out of four points from the Icemen in the two-game weekend series.
Niedert rebounded nicely from Friday night when he gave up seven goals in the Ice Muskies 8-7 shootout loss. Saturday he made a number of huge saves and never gave the Icemen a chance after Madison jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period.
"Our goalie came up big for us when he was called," head coach Rod Davidson said. "He played a heck of a game and we needed him to play like that."
After Brandon Holmes and Cameron Sault notched goals in the first period, forward Mitch Kerns extended the Ice Muskies lead with two goals in less than five minutes to give Madison a 4-0 lead early in the second period.
"Kerns broke it wide open," Davidson said. "Mitch sees the ice very well. He's a tremendous skater and puck handler. Those were two beautiful goals and they really changed the flow of game and provided a tremendous spark."
Still, Evansville had a golden opportunity to get back in the game when the Ice Muskies were called for two high sticking penalties just a minute apart midway through the second period. But Madison ended Evansville's hopes after Cameron Sault scored a shorthanded goal just seconds after the Ice Muskies killed off a five-on-three opportunity for the Icemen.
"The penalty kill was amazing," Davidson said. "Full marks to Andy Cripps and Pete Eloranta. They did a special job on killing that five-on-three."
After taking three of four points in their opening weekend, the Madison Ice Muskies return to action Tuesday night at Hartmeyer Ice Arena when they host the Battle Creek Revolution at 8:05 p.m.
