Keystone Ice Miners News Release

BLAINE, MN - Despite rallying from down two goals for the second straight game, the Ice Miners lost a heartbreaker, 3-2 in a shootout to the Topeka RoadRunners Wednesday night in their first game at the 2014 NAHL Showcase. Garrett Hallford and Scott Donahue scored the Keystone goals while Topeka goaltender Drew Vogler stopped all twelve Ice Miners shooters in the shootout.

Topeka took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when Dawson DiPietro fired a wrist shot past Ice Miners goaltender Alex Blankenburg. The RoadRunners extended their lead in the 2nd period when Beau Dommer crashed the net and made it a 2-0 Topeka lead. In the final minutes of the middle frame, Hallford got the Ice Miners on the board when he cashed in a two-on-one pass from Cameron Smith. Late in the third, Donahue found the tying goal, burying a rebound at the side of the net.

After a scoreless overtime, it took twenty-four combined shooters before a puck was put in the net by RoadRunner defenseman Will Scherer. The goal came with some controversy, as the officials didn't initially signal that the puck had crossed the line until having a conference and deciding that it did. Scherer celebrated immediately but when Blankenburg stood up, the puck was in front of the goal line.

The Ice Miners fell to 1-0-1 while Topeka improved to 3-0-0 on the young season. Keystone will play the Austin Bruins next in the Showcase Thursday morning at 11:30 AM ET/10:30 CT. All Showcase games will be broadcast on FASTHockey.com.
