Ice Flyers Sneak by RiverHawks
February 17, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Pensacola Ice Flyers used a late third-period goal to hand the RiverHawks their third straight loss Thursday night at the James Brown Arena. Defenseman Tyler Lyon let loose a snap shot from the top of the slot that deflected off of RiverHawks' goaltender Adam Avramenko's shoulder and into the back of the net.
The late goal negated a second period comeback for the RiverHawks that saw them battle back from two goals down.
The win puts the two teams in a three-way tie for second place in the Southern Professional Hockey League along with the Huntsville Havoc. All three teams have 48 points.
The RiverHawks took the lead early in the first period when Captain Matt Auffrey picked up a turnover in the slot and fired a snap-shot over the shoulder of Ice Flyers' goaltender Peter Hirsch.
The Ice Flyers stormed back just over two minutes later when Chris Bratina worked the puck off of the side boards towards the slot and let loose a shot that hit the back of the net. A minute and a half later the Ice Flyers took the lead when Matt Whitehead found a loose puck at the side of the net and slipped it just over the goal line.
Pensacola managed to extend their lead to two goals in the second period as Tanner Shultz converted a power play opportunity. However, the RiverHawks would claw their way back just a minute later when Jason Dolgy would get his stick on a Luke Lucyk shot that deflected into the net. That was followed shortly by Auffrey's second unassisted goal, when he attempted a pass to the front of the net that banked off of an Ice Flyers' defenseman and past Hirsch.
The RiverHawks are back in action at the James Brown Arena Saturday, February 19th as they face the Louisiana Ice Gators. It is Faith and Family Night featuring a pre and post-game concert from the band Atlas. The puck drops at 7:30pm.
