
Ice Flyers Fall to Louisiana 3-2 in OT

PENSACOLA, FL. (February 4, 2014) - T he Pensacola Ice Flyers hosted the Louisiana IceGators looking to maintain sole possession of first place in the SPHL. Unfortunately, Louisiana pulled out a 3-2 overtime win and tied the Ice Flyers in the standings.
The Ice Flyers took the 1-0 lead 8:05 into the first period when Corey Banfield hit in a rebound from the left of Louisiana goalie Matt Zenzola. Podge Turnbull and John Dunbar assisted on the power play goal. That would be the only goal in the frame and Pensacola outshot Louisiana 12-7.
Louisiana tied the game just 4:11 into the second when Tyler Barr scored an unassisted goal. The game stood tied for almost 13 minutes until Malcolm Lyles scored the Ice Flyers' second power play goal of the game with 2:27 left in the period. Joe Caveney and Turnbull assisted on Lyles' sixth goal of the season.
Louisiana tied the game at two after six minutes had passed in the third with a goal by Clark Byczynski. The game was still tied following regulation so the teams headed to overtime. The IceGators sealed the victory when Bret Peppler scored with only 1:33 left in overtime.
MacKinnon stopped 29 of the 32 shots he faced. Lyles was named the third star and the Banfield was the second.
The Ice Flyers next home game is this Friday, Feb. 7 at 7:05 p.m. when they host the Knoxville Ice Bears. It will be Mardi Gras Night in the Hangar featuring the Krewe of Pucks Mardi Gras on Ice Parade during the first intermission.
