ICE Beat Blades in OT for Third Straight Win

April 6, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Winnipeg Ice News Release

The ICE faced off against the Saskatoon Blades tonight with Winnipeg on a two game winning streak and the Blades on a two game losing streak. Both teams played their last game on Sunday, with the ICE beating the Pats by a score of 5-2 and Saskatoon losing 3-1 against the Wheat Kings. Carl Stankowski got the nod for the ICE while Nolan Maier got the start in between the pipes for the Blades.

Peyton Krebs would put the ICE up 1-0 at 12:13 as the ICE captain beat Maier up high on the power play as Josh Paulhus was in the box for interference. The goal would extend Krebs' point streak to 12 games as the forward has been red hot this season. That would be the only goal of the period as the Blades took the advantage in the shot category 12-8.

Saskatoon would answer eight minutes into the second as Kyle Crnkovic slid a pass over to Tristen Robins on a 2-on-1 and the Blades forward shot it up and over the sprawled out Stankowski to bring the game back level. Winnipeg grabbed the lead again with 3:50 left in the second frame as a Skyler Bruce pass went off a Blades defensemen in front of the net and right to Chase Bertholet who potted his second of the season. Shots were tied 21 apiece after the second period.

The Blades tied it up again early in the third period as Charlie Wright's point shot hit Evan Patrician in the slot who then backhanded it through a crowd past Stankowski's five-hole. Lisowsky collected the second assist on the goal that came just 1:53 into the period. Saskatoon had a few good chances in the dying minutes of the game but Stankowski came up big for the ICE, leading to the second overtime game between these teams in just three games.

Early pressure by Winnipeg in OT led to Chase Wouters taking a tripping penalty on Krebs. The ICE would capitalize on the 4-on-3 power play as Krebs ripped a shot that just barely snuck through Maier and was left sitting in the blue paint for Owen Pederson to tap home for his seventh of the campaign. Stankowski made 27 saves in the win as his counterpart Maier finished with 29.

Winnipeg will look for their fourth win in a row as they face-off against the Moose Jaw Warriors tomorrow at 5:00pm CT.
