Knoxville Ice Bears News Release
KNOXVILLE, TN (February 9, 2012) - The Knoxville Ice Bears awarded one lucky fan with a $1000 check and the lucky crowd of 2,542 with the first win in seven games. The Ice Bears hosted the Fayetteville FireAntz at the Civic Coliseum for their eighth match-up of the season. Emery Olauson notched his third hat trick of the season with his game winning goal in overtime lifting the Ice Bears a 5-4 victory.
Ricky Helmbrecht was first to ignite the scoreboard off a direct faceoff win from Kevin Swider 7:41 into the first period. The Ice Bears ended the first period leading to 2-0 after Olauson's first goal of the game. Swider and Eric Satim were credited with the assist.
Fayetteville got on the board at 5:56 into the second period when Jesse Cole shot past newly signed Ice Bear's goalie Kyle Rank. The rookie, who was signed to a contract on Monday, started in goal tonight for his first professional game.
Olauson notched his second goal just under 9 minutes later, again assisted by Swider and Satim. Fayetteville's Mike Atkinson scored with 2:20 left in the period, but the Ice Bears remained on top with a 3-2 lead at the end of two periods.
Fayetteville struck early in the third period, tying the game at 3 just 2:35 minutes into third period. Two minutes later, the FireAntz took their first lead of the game when Mike Forgie netted his second, unanswered goal.
Kyle VanderMale knotted the game at the 6 minute mark. Brett Valliquette and Mike Towns fed the puck to VanderMale. He shot to the goal and Fayetteville goalie Mike Brown attempted to stop it, but the momentum from the save caused him to finish knocking the puck past the goal line with his glove.
The teams were locked at 4 for the remainder of the third period. Both teams were awarded a power play when 2 of the 3 penalties of the game were earned, but with no goals, the game shifted to a 3-on-3 SPHL overtime.
Olauson, ranked third in scoring in the SPHL, shot past Brown 1:19 minutes into overtime to seal victory for the Ice Bears breaking them out of their 6-game slump and earning him a hat trick. Swider assisted the game winning goal.
