Iowa Cubs News Release
NASHVILLE, TN - The Iowa Cubs (27-38) defeated the Nashville Sounds (32-30) 8-4, Tuesday at First Tennessee Park. The win snaps a season-long five-game losing streak for Iowa, winning for the first time since sweeping a doubleheader against Oklahoma City on June 7.
It was all Nashville early on, with the Sounds jumping out to a 4-0 lead after four innings. All of Nashville's runs were off Iowa starter Casey Kelly (3-1), who went five innings and got a no-decision. He gave up four earned runs on six hits, walking five and striking out three.
The I-Cubs got in the scoring column on a Jacob Hannemann RBI single that scored Elliot Soto in the top of the fifth. Iowa tacked on another run in the sixth, before the offense erupted in the seventh by scoring six runs on just two hits to take an 8-4 lead. Mark Zagunis accounted for one of those hits, smacking a triple with the bases loaded to give Iowa a 6-4 lead. John Andreoli and Soto would draw back-to-back walks with the bases loaded, fueling eight unanswered runs for the I-Cubs.
Right-handed reliever David Berg (2-0) recorded the win, tossing a scoreless sixth inning. Relievers Jack Leathersich, Andury Acevedo and Pierce Johnson also chipped in scoreless innings, with the bullpen combining for four scoreless frames, striking out four and walking none.
Iowa's win over Nashville marks the first time the I-Cubs have overcome a four-run deficit to win the game since August 6, 2015 vs. Omaha at Principal Park, when the I-Cubs trailed 4-0 in that game before winning 5-4.
Iowa and Nashville go right back at it tomorrow with game two of the four-game series set for 7:05 p.m. Catch all the action on AM 940 or listen live on www.iowacubs.com .
