Iowa Cubs News Release

NASHVILLE, TN - The Iowa Cubs (28-39) defeated the Nashville Sounds (33-31) 4-2, Thursday at First Tennessee Park. The I-Cubs have now recorded comeback wins in two of their last three games to take a 2-1 advantage in the series against Nashville.

Iowa starting pitcher Williams Perez (1-7) recorded his first win of the season, pitching five innings and giving up one earned run on three hits, while walking two and striking out five. With the victory, he avoided becoming the first I-Cubs starter since 2000 to begin the season 0-8.

Nashville got on the board early with a Matt Olson sacrifice fly in the first inning to give the Sounds a 1-0 lead. A throwing error by Nashville shortstop Franklin Barreto in the sixth inning opened the door for an Iowa rally, with John Andreoli and Mark Zagunis drawing back-to-back walks against Nashville starter Paul Blackburn (4-6). The I-Cubs would take full advantage of the error, with Jacob Hannemann singling home Stephen Bruno and Victor Caratini smacking an RBI double that scored two to give Iowa a 3-1 lead.

Nashville would score a run off Iowa left-handed reliever Manny Parra in the bottom of the sixth to cut Iowa's lead to 3-2, before Iowa tacked on a run in the seventh to regain a two-run lead. Relievers Dylan Floro, Zac Rosscup and Pierce Johnson combined to throw four scoreless innings of relief, with Johnson recording his sixth save of the season.

Iowa seeks a win Friday to capture its first series win since taking three out of four against Las Vegas at Cashman Field May 15-18.

Iowa and Nashville finish the series at First Tennessee Park tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. before returning to Principal Park Saturday for a four-game set with Omaha. Catch all the action on AM 940 or listen live on www.iowacubs.com .
