
Hurricanes' late game push comes up short to the St. John's Edge.

ST. JOHN'S, NL. - On a milestone day for point guard Cliff Clinkscales' 1500 career assist and shooting guard Antoine Mason's 29 point performance the Halifax Hurricanes presented by Eastlink fall short in a late game comeback to the St. John's Edge 109-104 Sunday afternoon at the Mile One Centre in NBL Canada matinee action.
The Hurricanes came out slow shooting eight for 22 from the field, however they shot three for six from three-point range, led by Antoine Mason who shot three for five from the field, and finished with eight points in the first quarter. The Edge shot 12 for 24 from the field. St. John's Karrington Ward also had eight points, as the 'Canes trailed 27-21 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Hurricanes outscored the Edge 24-21. Chris Johnson hit two threes, and Halifax shot five for 12 from three-point range in the first half and along with Mason they combined for 30 of the 45 points for the Hurricanes on 12 of 24 shooting from the field trailing 48-45 at the break.
The two teams would go back and forth in the third quarter, 'Canes Kyle Arsenault would hit two threes and tie the game at 56 apiece early in the frame. Chris Johnson would continue to play well, he would lead the way with seven points in the quarter, however the Edge would close the quarter strong with under a minute to play Cane Broome would hit a three-pointer and Junior Cadougan would get to the basket for a layup, St. John's led 84-75 after three quarters.
In the fourth the Edge would go on a seven to two run to start the quarter and push their lead up to 12, their largest in the game. Mason then scored nine straight points and a CJ Washington layup cut the lead to four with 5:01 remaining in regulation. St. John's called a timeout, and then out of the timeout, Cadougan converted a layup and a Olu Ashalou dunk would increase the lead up to nine with 3:01 left, and they would hold on down the stretch.
Junior Cadougan led the way for the Edge finishing with 20 points on eight of 14 shooting from the field and eight assists. St. John's would finish with six players scoring in double figures. Chris Johnson chipped in 24 points from off the bench and CJ Washington finished with a double-double 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Hurricanes.
The two teams will play once again tomorrow night Monday, Jan. 25 in at the Mile One Centre, tip-off 6:30pm AST.
