HALIFAX, N.S. - Stellar defence from Defensive Player of the Year Rhamel Brownand an offensive explosion from Terry Thomas weren't enough to get the win for the Hurricanes at Scotiabank Centre on Thursday night, as they drop Game 1 of the Atlantic Division Semifinal to the Cape Breton Highlanders 89-87.
The Hurricanes led by as much as 13 points in Thursday's game, but Cape Breton closed the gap, by halftime, going into the break with a tied game. The Highlanders were hot from the three-point line, hitting 8-18 from the beyond the arc to fuel their offence.
It was Hurricanes turnovers that made the difference, however. Halifax turned the ball over 19 times, leading to 20 points for the Highlanders.
Thomas erupted for 33 points in his playoff debut for the Hurricanes, scoring 20 in the first half alone. He also picked up six rebounds, four steals and a block in his 35 minutes off the bench.
Rhamel Brown worked hard to limit the Highlander offence with three blocks to go with nine points and five rebounds.
Mike Poole put up 19 points in the contest to go with seven boards, while Jordan Washington scored his 10 points in the opening quarter of the game.
The Hurricanes will look to even the series up on Sunday for Game 2 Games 2 of the best of five at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax at 2 p.m. Tickets are available online or at the Ticket Atlantic Box Office.
