Hurricanes drop a tough one to league leaders London Lightning

HALIFAX, N.S. - Power forward CJ Washington led the Halifax Hurricanes with a season-high 31 points Tuesday evening at the Scotiabank Centre, but it wasn't enough to take the spark out of the London Lightning, who topped the home team 112-101 in NBL Canada action, sponsored by local tavern The Midtown Tavern.

The Halifax Hurricanes, presented by Eastlink, had just come off a 95-88 loss on home court to the defending league champions the Moncton Magic on Sunday afternoon.

The Lightning came out hot shooting from three-point range, led by Marcus Capers who hit his first three shots from deep. He went 3-3 from beyond the arc and finished with nine points in the first quarter. The Lightning shot four for eight from three-point range. Halifax's Joel Kindred also had nine points, as the 'Canes shot one for 11 from distance, trailing 29-25 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Hurricanes caught their stride offensively. Washington went five for seven from the field and led the charge with 17 points, while Chris Johnson chipped in 11 points off the bench as the Hurricanes went 11 for 17 from the field at 65 per cent and led 56-55 at the break.

The third would have a different feel as the London Lightning tightened up their defence, holding Halifax to 16 points in the quarter on seven for 20 shooting from the field. Anthony Gaines Jr.and Mareik Isom provided a spark off the bench for London with five snd eight points, respectively, in the quarter. The Lightning led 78-72 heading into the fourth.

London wouldn't look back. The Lightning opened up their lead as they went up by 15 points with under four minutes remaining in regulation. They would score 34 points in the quarter, led by Xavier Moon, who tallied 15 points in the quarter on six of eight, shooting from the field to finish with 21 points. The Lightning bench outscored Halifax's 52 to 27 in the game.

The Hurricanes next game is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 24 in St. John's at the Mile One Centre against the St. John's Edge.
