Halifax Hurricanes News Release

Halifax, (NS) - The Halifax Hurricanes played their final home game of the 2016-2017 NBL Canada season against Atlantic Conference rivals the Moncton Miracles at the Scotiabank Centre in Downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia on Sunday afternoon. Halifax was looking to get back into the win column after dropping a 115-114 nail biter to the Island Storm in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

Both teams started the game playing a high tempo offense, putting up shots early and often. The game saw eight total three-point attempts from the two teams in the first six minutes of the game. Forward CJ Washington paced the Hurricanes early, scoring 12 of Halifax's 40 first quarter on 5-5 shooting. The Canes finished the quarter with a 40-26 lead. The fast paced play carried on into the second quarter with both teams cooling off only slightly. The Hurricanes finished the first half with a 70-51 lead behind 64% shooting from the field. Moncton refused to go away in the second half, however, outscoring the Hurricanes 29-21 in the third quarter. After scoring only 18 points in the paint in the whole first half, the Miracles were able to virtually match that in the third quarter with 16. However, the Miracles were unable to keep pace with the Hurricanes in the fourth quarter, getting outscored 39-26. The Hurricanes finished the game with a convincing 135-110 victory at home.

Washington led Halifax with a 31 points and 11 rebounds, registering his third straight double-double. Halifax Forward Billy White also finished with a double-double scoring 22 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Point Guard Cliff Clinkscales chipped in with 9 assists and Hurricanes fan favourite Joey Haywood added 14 points in 18 minutes off the bench.

The Miracles top scorers on the night were Forward Tydran Beatty and Guard Melvin Johnson III with 20 points each. Moncton also got a big contribution from Guard Malik Story with 19 points.

The Hurricanes will take to the road next week to finish the regular season on a two game road swing against Central Conference opponents the Niagara River Lions on Wednesday and the Windsor Express on Friday.
