Mohegan Wolves News Release
Uncasville, CT (June 28th, 2002)- The Mohegan Wolves (3-10), as they have all season long, showed glimpses of brilliance, but could not maintain a consistent level of play and were defeated Friday night by the playoff clinching Cape Fear Wildcats (10-2) by the score 63-32.
Mohegan drew first blood when Shawn Maclean hit a 30-yard field goal putting the Wolves ahead 3-0. Cape Fear answered with an Eddie Miller 3-yard run giving the Wildcats a 6-3 lead. Mohegan's offensive dynamo Brandon Burnside gave the Wolves a 10-6 advantage when he grabbed a 40-yard bomb from Cable Davis.
The Wolves went into offensive shutdown for the next two quarters. Cable Davis scored Mohegan's only points of the 2nd or 3rd quarters on a 1-yard run in the second stanza, while Cape Fear tallied 43 points during the same time span.
Brandon Burnside added two late touchdowns, one on a 4-yard reception and the other on an electrifying 54-yard kickoff return, but it was too little too late as the Wildcats went on to beat Mohegan 63-32.
Cape Fear's QB Mike Gluski passed for 167 yards and 5 touchdowns on the night. WR/DB Troy Esprit earned Ironman of the Game honors for his 10 reception, 98 yard, one TD night. Eddie Miller added 5 receptions for 56 yards and 3 touchdowns. He rushed for another touchdown as well. Wildcat DS Clarence Moniba was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game. He had 6 tackles, an interception and one pass defended. Lineman EJ Burt recorded a sack, which broke the af2 single season sack record. He now has 20 ½ sacks on the season.
Brandon Burnside was again the Wolves primary offensive weapon. He had 7 receptions for 110 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also had 116 yards on kick returns and a return for a touchdown. Cable Davis passed for 206 yards and 2 touchdowns and rushed for another TD. Heron O'Neal was named game MVP. He had an interception to go with 2 ½ tackles and a pass defended.
Mohegan is off this week and will travel to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to take on the Pioneers on July 13th.
