Macon Knights (11-2) 66, Tallahassee Thunder (7-5) 43

MACON, Ga. - JOHN RAYBORN exploded for nine touchdown passes as the Macon Knights upended Tallahassee 66-43 in front of 3,006 fans at the Macon Coliseum Friday night.

After several lead exchanges in the first quarter, NORMAN MASON broke the game open for Macon, intercepting a VIC PENN pass in the end zone and returning it to the Thunder's five-yard line. Rayborn then found JAQUEZ RUMPH on a scoring play that signaled the beginning of a 45-6 Macon run that did not end until ADESOLA BADON's PAT return with 13:07 left in the game.

Rayborn was the game MVP, throwing for 278 yards and a Week 9 high of nine touchdowns. Mason was the Ironman with two catches for 38 yards and a touchdown on offense and a 45-yard interception return and three tackles on defense. DENARIO SMALLS was the ADT Defensive Player of the Game with six tackles, five passes defended, a forced fumble and a fumble returned 19 yards.

COMONE FISCHER recorded two sacks to lead the Thunder's defensive effort while Penn threw for 329 yards and four scores to lead Tallahassee's offense.

Cape Fear Wildcats (10-2) 63, Mohegan Wolves (3-10) 32

UNCASVILLE, Conn. - A crowd of 5,413 fans witnessed E.J. BURT become the af2 sack king Friday on a fourth quarter takedown as Cape Fear defeated the Wolves 63-32 at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Burt's sack with 8:57 left in the game led to TETO SIMPSON's 15-yard fumble recovery for a score, giving the Wildcats a commanding 56-25 advantage. Burt broke ERNEST CERTAIN's mark of 20.0 sacks in a season set in 2001, and now the Cape Fear lineman has 20.5 to his credit.

Mohegan opened the scoring on a SHAWN McCLEAN field goal, but then trailed 6-3 after EDDIE MILLER dove in for a three-yard touchdown run. On Mohegan's next possession, BRANDON BURNSIDE hauled in a 40-yard pass from CABLE DAVIS, but the Wildcats responded by outscoring the home team 43-7 in quarters two and three.

Game Ironman TROY ESPRIT followed up a 10-yard touchdown reception with a safety to start a 22-0 run that the Wildcats rode from 4:17 in the second quarter until a Burnside score with 11:35 left in the fourth quarter. Esprit ended the game with 10 receptions for 98 yards and a score on offense and two tackles, one for a loss, and a safety on defense.

CLARENCE MONIBA garnered ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors with a game-high six tackles and a 13-yard interception return that led to a Cape Fear second-quarter score. HERON O'NEAL was named the game MVP for his effort in the Wolves secondary. O'Neal returned an interception 40 yards and recorded 2.5 tackles.

Pensacola Barracudas (6-6) 49, Jacksonville Tomcats (6-6) 40

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Game MVP JOSEPH KOROMA caught only five passes, but three went for touchdowns, including the game-winner, as Pensacola defeated Jacksonville 49-40 Friday before a crowd of 2,679 people.

LAWRENCE PULLEN pulled in a 13-yard touchdown pass with 12:40 left in the game to give Jacksonville a slim 34-33 advantage. However, Pensacola responded with three unanswered scores, concluded by Koroma's game-winning 16-yard score with 53 seconds remaining.

JASPER PENDERGRASS earned Ironman recognition with 32 yards rushing, including the fourth-quarter score. Defensively, Pendergrass recorded 3.5 tackles. KENNY HILL was the ADT Defensive Player of the Game, registering a team-high 5.5 tackles, three passes defended and recovering a fumble.

RASHARD CASEY threw for 157 yards and three touchdowns to lead Jacksonville while CHARLIE PETERSON amassed 225 passing yards and six touchdowns. Pullen led all receivers with eight receptions for 134 yards and four touchdowns.

Arkansas Twisters (7-5) 45, Birmingham Steeldogs (8-4) 44 - overtime

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - It took an extra eight minutes of playing time, but the Arkansas Twisters defeated the Birmingham Steeldogs 45-44 in front of 5,479 fans at the BJCC Arena Friday.

The Steeldogs led 38-35 late in the fourth, but Arkansas kicker MARK NORRIS connected on a 29-yard field goal as time expired to send the game into overtime. It took Arkansas just 1:38 to draw first blood in the extra period, as RICKY HEBERT connected with LENNIE JOHNSON from 20 yards out. The extra point was good, giving the Twisters a 45-38 advantage. Birmingham answered with a 13-yard dash from DEJUAN WASHINGTON, but the Steeldogs couldn't cash in on the two-point conversion.

Hebert, coming off of an outstanding performance against Tulsa, continued to showcase his talent. He completed 27-of-47 passes for 303 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. WR/DB KEVIN WILLIAMS had a breakout performance, catching 15 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns.

Birmingham QB MONTRESSA KIRBY finished 15-of-32 for 243 yards and three touchdowns. OS WAYNE THOMAS (game MVP) had a memorable night, catching nine passes for 171 yards and three touchdowns. Thomas cemented his name in the af2 record book with 5:13 remaining in the second quarter when he caught his 100th career touchdown pass.

ANTHONY JORDAN had four catches for 49 yards, one interception and 2.5 tackles to earn Ironman honors. Arkansas' GREG TAYLOR was named the ADT Defensive Player of the Game.

Tennessee Valley Vipers (10-2) 53, Mobile Wizards (0-12) 40

MOBILE, Ala. - JERMAINE ALFRED passed for 227 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Tennessee Valley Vipers past in-state foe Mobile Friday night before 2,349 fans at the Mobile Civic Center.

Mobile kept pace with Tennessee Valley for most of the game, matching the Vipers score for score. After going back and forth for most of the first half, the Vipers took a seven-point lead into halftime. Mobile's KENDRICK LEE had a 56-yard kickoff return in the third to tie the game at 27, but that is as close as the Wizards would get. Tennessee Valley scored four of the game's final six touchdowns, including one off a missed field goal and one from a fumble recovery.

Alfred earned MVP honors for his efforts while RODNEY BROWN was named the Ironman of the game. Brown caught five balls for 69 yards and a score. He also tallied a 16-yard rushing touchdown and had the aforementioned missed field goal runback. The ADT Defensive Player of the Game was EUGENE PHILLIPS.

For Mobile, MELVIN HILL tossed 17 completions for 173 yards and four scores. JERRY GUYE led Mobile receivers with five catches for 60 yards and a score. KENDRICK HILL had five receptions for 54 yards and two scores to go along with his kickoff return touchdown.

Charleston Swamp Foxes (5-7) 49, Greensboro Prowlers (3-10) 19

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Swamp Foxes pitched two scoreless quarters and racked up 270 yards of total offense to complete the season sweep of the Greensboro Prowlers, 49-19 Saturday night in front of 3,560 fans at the North Charleston Coliseum.

After exchanging scores throughout the first quarter, the Swamp Foxes held a 19-13 lead heading into the second period. Despite threatening Greensboro drives, Charleston managed to increase its advantage thanks to a pair of BILLY COOK missed field goal returns and a MIKE DAVIS field goal block that sparked Charleston touchdowns. A third-quarter JUSTIN SKINNER field goal helped add to the Swamp Foxes lead and Greensboro found itself trailing 35-13 going into the final period of play. Charleston managed to hold off any comeback threats with two one-yard rushing scores in the fourth quarter that sealed the victory.

Swamp Fox rookie quarterback MIKE BATH threw for 202 yards and three touchdowns on 13-of-23 passing and added his 14th rushing TD of the year to earn game MVP honors. BEN CHRISTOPHER was the Ironman of the game with 41 yards and two touchdowns rushing and four receptions for 31 yards and a touchdown.

ADT Defensive Player of the Game MIKE BROWN led the Swamp Foxes on the other side of the ball. Brown tallied seven tackles on the night, including four solo stops. He also made his ninth interception of the season. He added a pair of catches for 24 yards on offense.

Greensboro was led by former Fox ANTOINE CALLOWAY. The WR/DB caught seven passes for 90 yards and a touchdown. He added a tackle on defense. Quarterback CHRIS WEIBEL was 19-for-36 for 176 yards with a pair of TDs and two interceptions.

Columbus Wardogs (3-9) 56, Carolina Rhinos (2-10) 28

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Columbus Wardogs used a 28-point second quarter to ride to a 56-28 victory over divisional rival Carolina before 3,505 fans at the Columbus Civic Center Saturday in the first of back-to-back games between the teams.

JAMI OATES hauled in a 45-yard pass from CALEB SLOVER with 23 seconds left in the first quarter to tie the game 14-14, but Columbus exploded for 28 points in the second period to jump out to a 42-20 halftime lead. After a scoreless third quarter, JARVIS DAVIS caught a six-yard pass and Slover rushed into the end zone for the two-point conversion to reduce the lead to 42-28. However, on the ensuing kickoff MIKE SCOTT returned the ball 57 yards for a touchdown to help seal the win.

In just his second start for the Wardogs, JEFF WELSH completed 18-of-30 passes for 301 yards and six touchdowns to guide Columbus to its first win in five games and earn MVP honors.

Slover completed 14-of-39 passes for 165 yards with one interception and four touchdowns. NICK JOHNSON was the leading receiver for the Rhinos with 59 yards five receptions and one touchdown.

The Wardogs' defense was led by ADT Defensive Player of the Game SHEDRIC HARRIS, who had 3.5 tackles, one interception and six passes defended. Ironman of the Game SHAMARI BUCHANAN added two tackles and had eight catches for 157 yards and three TDs.

Wichita Stealth (5-8) 48, Louisville Fire (2-10) 28

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Wichita QB RON LOPEZ threw for 337 yards and six touchdowns as the Stealth defeated the Louisville Fire Saturday night before 9,600 fans at Freedom Hall.

The Stealth used a 21-point second quarter to build a 34-14 halftime lead and never looked back. Lopez went 19-of-27 on the night, earning game MVP honors in the process. Lopez spread the ball around all night as six different Stealth receivers caught passes.

ANTHONY SHELMAN picked up 35 yards on seven carries to pace the Fire's ground attack. Shelman finished with three rushing scores and had two tackles, one for a loss, on defense to earn Ironman honors.

HAROLD PIERSEY was the game's ADT Defensive Player of the Game with 4.5 tackles, an interception and four passes defended for a Stealth unit that held Louisville to just 157 yards of total offense. GREG KYLER led Wichita's receivers with six receptions for 105 yards and a score.

Norfolk Nighthawks (6-6) 50, New Haven Ninjas (4-8) 48

NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk Nighthawks kicker MATT McNEW nailed a 19-yard field goal with 32 seconds to play to give Norfolk a 50-48 victory over the New Haven Ninjas with 3,527 fans in attendance at the Norfolk Scope Arena.

New Haven had one last chance to win, but CHRIS BODEN's pass on third down was intercepted by DESMOND WASHINGTON at the Nighthawks' goal line. Washington, the ADT Defensive Player of the Game, finished with 2.5 tackles and five breakups to go along with his first interception of the season.

In a game that featured seven lead changes, neither team could open a sizeable advantage. Norfolk led 21-7 early in the first half, but New Haven rallied on an ANTHONY COMER 18-yard touchdown reception and a 12-yard KELLY TAYLOR rushing score to go into the halftime break down 27-21.

The Ninjas opened the fourth quarter with two unanswered touchdowns to take a 48-41 lead with 8:38 to play. Norfolk scored on its next possession, but missed the extra point to close the gap to 48-47. The Nighthawks' defense forced New Haven to give up the ball on downs with 3:52 to play, setting up McNew's game-winning kick.

New Haven OS TERRENCE QUATTLEBAUM was the Ironman of the Game with 282 all-purpose yards. He returned a kickoff and a missed field goal for touchdowns and caught a team-high five passes for 77 yards and one score.

CHRIS WALLACE earned Game MVP honors, completing 23-of-35 pass attempts for 301 yards and five touchdowns. Boden finished the game 13-for-34 for 154 yards and three touchdowns.

Richmond Speed (10-2) 66, Albany Conquest (10-2) 59

ALBANY, N.Y. - BOB BEES dove into the end zone with just nine seconds remaining in the game to break a 59-59 tie and give Richmond a 66-59 victory over Albany before 6,592 fans at Pepsi Arena.

DAMON THOMPSON gave the Speed a 59-52 lead with 1:00 left in the game on a 34-yard touchdown reception, but RYAN VENA found COREY HILL from 10 yards out just 15 seconds later to tie the game at 59-59. On the ensuing kickoff, KEVIN HARVEY broke off a 33-yard return to Albany's 20-yard line. A penalty on Albany and a couple of completions put the Speed at the Albany two-yard line, where it took Bees two attempts to creep into the end zone.

Bees, named the game's MVP, threw for five touchdowns and 314 yards and added two scores on the ground. Thompson grabbed 11 balls for 139 yards and one touchdown while JEFF TOWNSLEY scored three touchdowns and totaled 80 yards. Harvey was the game's Ironman with 11 yards rushing, 65 yards receiving and three touchdowns, including a fumble recovery in the end zone for a score.

Vena finished with 278 yards and six touchdowns while COREY HILL had seven receptions for 84 yards and a score. Albany's MIKE GUAZZO was named the ADT Defensive Player of the Game.

Memphis Xplorers (5-8) 34, Florida Firecats (6-6) 32

ESTERO, Fla. - The Memphis Xplorers welcomed the return of RUSSELL COPELAND with a 34-32 victory over Florida in front of 5,278 fans at TECO Arena.

Memphis scored on every possession but one, in the first half and Copeland pulled in a 40-yard touchdown pass on his first series back as Memphis pulled out to a 28-19 halftime lead.

Memphis scored on its first possession of the second half, but the Florida defense held firm the remainder of the game and stopped the Xplorers in the red zone on two occasions to give its offense a chance for a comeback.

After stopping the Xplorers on downs, JARRED WARE returned a missed field goal attempt 35 yards to the Memphis 15-yard line and the Cats scored with 22 seconds on ERIC BOLAND's two-yard touchdown reception. The Firecats needed to convert on a two-point conversion to tie the game, but JOHNNY MAFFET was ruled out of bounds before crossing the goal line and Memphis escaped with the win.

TIM LESTER was the game MVP, throwing for 246 yards and two touchdowns. DEMARRIO SHANK picked up Ironman recognition with five yards rushing and a score on offense and three tackles and a quarterback hurry on defense.

Florida's ROY STABLER was the ADT Defensive Player of the Game with 11 tackles, two interceptions for 43 yards and one forced fumble. BRIAN SPARACINO ended the game 21-of-33 for 229 yards and four scores.

Augusta Stallions (11-1) 54, Roanoke Steam (6-7) 44

ROANOKE, Va. - Roanoke jumped out to a 27-7 first-half lead, but Augusta managed to overcome the 20-point deficit and six turnovers to post a 54-44 victory over the Steam in front of 2,200 fans.

TACOMA FONTAINE caught a 30-yard touchdown strike from MICHAEL THOMAS with 6:50 left in the first quarter, erasing Augusta's early 7-0 lead and igniting a Steam offense that would score 27 unanswered points in the following 20 minutes. The Stallions cut the deficit to 27-14 at halftime.

GLEN GAUNTT led the Stallions' second half comeback with five touchdown passes and a run for a score. Augusta picked off three passes in the second half, scoring touchdowns after each turnover.

Gauntt finished the game 22-of-35 with six touchdowns and three interceptions. Three of those touchdowns went to WR STUART BROWN, who pulled in six catches for 92 yards and netted MVP honors for the game.

Stallions DS ADRIAN JONES, named ADT Defensive Player of the Game, intercepted three passes. Steam WR/DB KARLOS ODUM, who was second on the Steam with 35 receiving yards on three catches, was named Ironman of the Game. MIKE VOLARVICH and MICHAEL THOMAS combined for 208 passing yards and three scores.

Rochester Brigade (6-7) 55, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers (4-9) 38

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Rochester's defense produced five stops that led to touchdowns, as the Brigade defeated Northeast Division rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 55-38 in front of 7,137 fans at the Blue Cross Arena Saturday.

MATT D'ORAZIO rushed in two of his five rushing touchdowns from seven and two yards out to give the Brigade an early 14-0 lead. However, BRYAN SNYDER pulled the Pioneers back with a four-yard pass to JOHN KNUST and a seven-yarder to AMAM ABYE. Rochester then scored three unanswered touchdowns to increase its lead to 34-14 before JIMMIE KIBBLE hit a 35-yard field goal to end the first half.

Knust opened the second-half scoring with a 19-yard grab, but Rochester strung together three more unanswered scores to run its lead to 55-24 with 9:28 to play. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton scored the final two touchdowns of the game, but the advantage proved too large.

D'Orazio, who was named game MVP, rushed the ball 12 times for 41 yards and tied a league record with five rushing touchdowns. He also completed 15-of-22 passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns. The ADT Defensive Player of the Game was AHMAD WHITEHEAD, who recovered an onside kick that helped preserve the Brigade victory and registered an assist and a quarterback hurry. DEREK BAKER caught four passes for 61 yards and two touchdowns, registered three solo tackles and rushed the ball two times for eight yards and one score en route to being named the Ironman of the Game.

Snyder finished the night 19-of-36 with 159 yards and four touchdowns, while Knust had seven receptions for 66 yards and two scores to lead the Pioneers' receivers.

Tulsa Talons (10-2) 42, Peoria Pirates (9-4) 39

PEORIA, Ill. - The Tulsa Talons outscored the Peoria Pirates 35-18 in the second half to defeat the Pirates 42-39 in front of 6,576 fans at Carver Arena in Peoria.

Tulsa forced two second-half fumbles and took advantage on both occasions with touchdowns. JERMAINE SHEFFIELD caught a five-yard pass from RONNIE GORDON with 3:12 left in the game to pull Peoria to within 35-33, but JOHNNY BALOUS reinforced the Talons' lead with a 12-yard run with a minute to play.

With 53 seconds remaining in the game, Gordon connected with Sheffield on a 31-yard touchdown pass giving the Pirates hope. However, on the ensuing onside kick, Tulsa recovered and managed to run out the clock.

ANTHONY BUICH, the co-MVP of the game, completed 24-of-33 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns to lead Tulsa. MITCH ALLNER finished the game with 137 yards on 13 catches and three touchdowns.

Peoria DS LINCOLN DUPREE shared MVP honors with Buich. Dupree had five kickoff returns for 141 yards and two touchdowns of 57 and 55 yards respectfully. Dupree also was awarded Ironman of the Game. He had an interception touchdown return for 33 yards and eight solo tackles with two pass deflections.

Gordon completed 14-of-25 passes with one interception and 182 yards and three touchdowns in his first start. FRANK WEST was selected the ADT Defensive Player of the Game. West recorded 11 solo tackles with one pass deflection.

Bossier City Battle Wings (8-5) 54, Quad City Steamwheelers (7-5) 52

BOSSIER CITY, La. - SCOTT TYNER's 36-yard field goal with two seconds left in regulation earned Bossier City a 54-52 win over Quad City at the CenturyTel Center Saturday and improved the Battle Wings' home record to 6-0.

The Steamwheelers appeared to have control of the game when a pass from SHERARD POTEETE was intercepted by Quad City's BRENT BROWNER with 43 seconds remaining in regulation time. However, after Quad City failed to capture a first down, the Battle Wings claimed possession with 18 seconds left. After several quick passing plays, Tyner launched his game-winning 36-yard field goal.

WR/DB LARRY NIXON led the Battle Wings' timely offensive attack with a career-high four touchdowns. His 106 receiving yards also marked a personal best.

Quad City WR/LB CHRIS ANTHONY earned game MVP honors in the losing effort with 12 catches for 195 yards, including six touchdown grabs. The Battle Wings' CEDRIC ROBINSON was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game with four tackles and five passes defended.

MIKE CAWLEY completed 20-of-35 passes for 292 yards and eight touchdowns to lead the Steamwheelers air attack while Poteete had 298 passing yards and five scores for Bossier City. VAL MORRIS caught four passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns and had three tackles and three passes defended to earn Ironman honors.

San Diego Riptide (7-6) 67, Fresno Frenzy (4-8) 33

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Powered by four touchdowns by JERRY GARRETT and lucky bounces off the nets late in the game, the San Diego Riptide rolled over the Fresno Frenzy 67-33 Saturday in front of 6,430 fans at the Sports Arena.

KENNY ROSE knotted up 33-33 on a one-yard run with 4:13 left in the third quarter, but the Riptide responded by scoring the game's final 34 points, starting with Garrett's two-yard rushing TD at the end of the third quarter and continuing with RYAN SMITH and AAZAAR ABDUL-RAHIM grabbing short scoring strikes from KANE CLAUNCH to put San Diego up 53-33.

The bouncing ball went the way of the Riptide on its ensuing two kickoffs as JASON BURK scooped up an errant ball that set up Garrett's third rushing score of the night and fourth overall TD, a four-yarder. ZACK LAMONDA, playing in his first af2 game, then grabbed the following kickoff and leapt seven yards into the end zone for the game's final score.

The Riptide ended the first quarter leading 21-0, but Fresno fought back in the second, outscoring San Diego 20-6 to go into the break down 27-20.

Garrett was the game MVP, racking up 83 yards and a score through the air and 18 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. RICO CURTIS earned Ironman honors with three catches for 38 yards for the Riptide offense and 9.5 tackles on defense. RYAN CUTHBERT racked up 6.5 tackles and a sack to garner ADT Defensive Player of the Game recognition.

LAMONT WEBB finished the game with 171 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns to pace Fresno.

Hawaiian Islanders (3-10) 49, Bakersfield Blitz (7-5) 35

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Hawaii outscored Bakersfield 19-7 in the second half en route to a 49-35 victory over the visiting Blitz at Neal Blaisdell Arena in front of 3,512 fans.

Hawaii rode the momentum of NIAN TAYLOR's 36-yard touchdown reception as time expired in the first half into the third quarter, where the Islanders held Bakersfield scoreless. In the third, NIKO VITALE rushed for a two-yard score, giving Hawaii a 37-28 advantage headed into the final period. However, Bakersfield cut the score down to 37-35 on NATHAN MUNSON's 11-yard pass from CHAD ELLIOTT.

In the final two minutes of play, Hawaii sealed the win. Taylor struck again, catching a 13-yard touchdown pass from DARNELL ARCENEAUX with 1:07 to play and, with Bakersfield looking for a chance to tie the game, CHRIS PAOGOFIE picked up a Elliott fumble and returned it 18 yards for the clinching score.

Taylor was the game MVP with four receptions for 99 yards and three touchdowns. On defense, he recorded one solo tackle, one assist, intercepted a pass and forced a fumble. JOSH WHITE finished as the ADT Defensive Player of the Game with 1.5 tackles and a sack that led to the late Elliott fumble that Paogofie returned for a score.

Elliott threw for 288 yards and five touchdowns while STEVE WOFFORD made his Bakersfield return with 156 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

7/7/01: Two Memphis players - FB/LB QUENTIN CRADLE and FB/LB JEREMY SCRUGGS - break the single-season rushing record (312 yards) in the same game. At the time, Cradle has 317 yards and Scruggs has 314. They finish the season with 402 and 333, respectively . Louisville WR/DB BRIAN McDONALD sets the league record for kickoff return yards in a game with 240. A week later, he reels off 234 kick return yards, good for second-best in af2 history at the time.
