Will Bruin scored his fourth goal of the season and the Houston Dynamo played to a 1-1 draw with the Portland Timbers on Sunday afternoon at BBVA Compass Stadium.

The Dynamo (2-4-2; 8 points) visit Chivas USA next Saturday before returning home to begin a three-game home stand on May 7 against the Columbus Crew.

Dynamo captain Brad Davis returned to the starting lineup after missing three games with a right ankle sprain. The midfielder immediately contributed, providing the service on Houston's opening goal in the 16th minute. Davis received a pass from Corey Ashe near the corner and used his first touch to deliver a perfect cross inside the six-yard box and Bruin rose to head low and into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Bruin is tied for fourth place in MLS with four goals this season.

It was Davis' third assist of the season, and his third consecutive game with an assist.

Davis continued an active first half with his own chance in the 24th minute. The midfielder collected the ball on the right flank and dribbled forward before cutting inside and drilling a low shot from 25 yards. Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts dove to his left to make a save and the rebound fell to Kofi Sarkodie, who fired wide from a tight angle as Ricketts charged.

The Timbers equalized in the 33rd minute. Kalif Alhassan found space in front of the Houston penalty area and played a pass toward Darlington Nagbe that took a deflection into the path of Gaston Fernandez. The Argentine used one touch for a superb finish into the upper corner from 15 yards for his third goal of the season.

Five minutes later a long run from Diego Chara produced a scoring chance for Diego Valeri, but his shot from the edge of the penalty area was smothered by Tally Hall.

The Dynamo created a scoring opportunity three minutes after halftime, as Davis played wide to Boniek Garcia. The Honduran delivered a pinpoint cross from the right flank and Giles Barnes headed wide from eight yards.

In the 70th minute, Barnes slipped in behind the Houston defense and used a deft touch to settle a long ball from David Horst on the edge of the penalty area. Barnes drove to the endline and slipped a pass to the front of the six-yard box where Ricketts smothered Bruin's shot with a dive to his right.

A minute later, a Dynamo corner kick eventually cycled to Bruin at the top of the box. The fourth-year forward drove a low shot through traffic that rolled a foot past the far post.

A long team buildup produced another chance in the 90th minute. Ashe, Garcia and Andrew Driver combined on the left flank, with Driver turning inside the penalty area and sliding a pass across the box to substitute Mark Sherrod, who didn't connect cleanly on his shot moments after entering the match.

The Dynamo visit Chivas USA on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. CT from the Stub Hub Center in Carson, Calif.
