Houston Dynamo 2 News Release
TUKWILA, Wash. - A late rally from Houston Dynamo 2 fell short tonight as they fell 4-3 to Tacoma Defiance in the Western Conference quarterfinals of the MLS NEXT Pro playoffs. Dynamo 2 close the season with 12 victories following an expanded regular season and new format for the postseason.
This was the second consecutive appearance in the postseason for Dynamo 2, who entered the postseason with the seventh seed. The team rostered eight players for today's game that are either alums or actively playing with the Dynamo Academy. The team had 10 players from the Dynamo Academy in the final match of the regular season, a 2-1 victory away from home against the LA Galaxy II that secured this trip to the postseason.
Tacoma took the lead in the third minute after Travian Sousa crossed the ball across the 18-yard box and found Blake Bowen for the opening goal.
Tacoma doubled their lead in the 13th minute after Braudílio Rodrigues' effort from inside the box found the bottom corner of the far post. Rodrigues scored his second goal of the evening six minutes later after Bowen reached the endline and played the ball back to his teammate.
Dynamo 2 pulled a goal back in the 31st minute after midfielder Diego Gonzalez played a ball into the box for forward Jacob Evans. The forward found space inside the box for a shot and beat the Tacoma goalkeeper at the near post. That was Evans' fourth goal of the year.
Tacoma scored the first goal of the second half in the 53rd minute after Travin Sousa drove a ball across the box for Dylan Teves.
Houston scored their second goal of the evening following a turnover in the 79th minute. Gonzalez capitalized on the turnover and beat the Tacoma goalkeeper at the far post with a shot from distance. Gonzalez scored 10 goals in the regular season, and this was his 11th goal of the campaign.
Dynamo 2 defender Jathan Juarez found Isaiah LeFlore moments later in the heart of the box, LeFlore found the back of the net with a half-volley. This was LeFlore's third goal of the year for Dynamo 2.
Houston's first opportunity of the game came in the ninth minute and off Gonzalez's right foot. The Dynamo Academy product forced a save with a shot from outside the box. Gonzalez was one of the six Dynamo Academy players to start the match for Houston.
Juarez's effort from outside the box in the 21st minute skipped toward goal, but his effort was handled by the Tacoma goalkeeper.
Dynamo 2 goalkeeper Xavier Valdez made a key save in the 28th minute to deny Georgi Minoungou. The Dynamo 2 backline and Valdez was called into action again in the 43rd minute to deny Rodrigues.
Dynamo 2 forward Papa Ndoye forced a save in the 29th minute following a free kick. His shot was saved by the Tacoma shot stopper, but he lost control following the initial contact. Jacob Castro ultimately recovered to prevent a second effort from Dynamo 2.
Ndoye had Houston's first opportunity of the second half with a shot that was on target in the 63rd minute.
Dynamo 2 midfielder Paolo Rios entered the game as a substitute and found Juarez inside the box in the 87th minute but he was ruled offside following an effort that forced a save from Castro.
Ndoye forced a save at the far post in stoppage time following a corner kick. The forward was unmarked, but his volley was punched away from goal by the Tacoma goalkeeper.
Dynamo 2 close the year with a 12-13-5 record with a positive five goal differential in their second season in MLS NEXT Pro.
