Aiken Foxhounds News Release
AIKEN , S.C. - The Aiken Foxhounds (39-43, 17-20) twice built five-run leads before holding off the visiting South Georgia Peanuts (54-25, 21-14) 10-8 Monday night at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. The Foxhounds led 6-1 early before the Peanuts cut the lead to 6-5, and had a 10-5 lead entering the ninth cut to 10-8 before Aiken reliever A.J. Montano came in to induce a double play with the bases loaded to end the game.
A two-run single by Doc Brooks and an RBI single off the bat of Brandon Woolard cut the lead to two against Aiken's Mark Dewey. After a walk to Desi Wilson loaded the bases, manager Chris Bando brought in Montano from the bullpen to face Steve Butler. Butler hit the first pitch he saw to Tim Sweeney, who redeemed himself for two previous errors with a nice play. Bradley Key made the throw to first to complete the double play.
Dumas Garcia, one of the best pitchers in the South Coast League, started on the mound for the Peanuts but did not have his best stuff. Beginning in the second inning, the Foxhounds took advantage, benefiting from an error and two walks to score four runs despite getting just two hits. Garth McKinney plated two runs with a single, and pitcher John Ducey capped the scoring with an RBI single past a drawn in infield.
After Ducey worked three perfect innings, Curtis Goodwin led off the fourth with a double and scored on Mike Caruso's sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.
Garcia walked two straight Hounds to begin the bottom of the fourth and paid for it, as another RBI single from Ducey and a Dustin Richardson sacrifice fly plated both runners to increase the Aiken lead to five.
A huge fifth inning by the Peanuts almost tied the score, as the visitors scored four runs and chased Ducey from the game. Tug Gillingham plated a run with a pinch-hit single, and Jasha Balcom added another with an RBI double. Reid Price came on with two outs to get the final out of the inning.
With the lead down to 6-5, Kelly Hunt led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to center, his league-leading 23 rd of the season and seventh against the Peanuts.
Aiken added what proved to be three much-needed insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. After three walks, a runner caught stealing, and a hit batsman loaded the bases with one out, Tony Harper drilled a bases-clearing double to the gap in left-center.
Ducey, Harper, and Hunt each had two hits for the Foxhounds. Hunt, McKinney, and Key, who walked three times, each scored two runs for Aiken.
Brooks had three hits and two RBI to lead the Peanuts. Josh Eachues, who was recently traded from Aiken to South Georgia, went 0-for-3 with a walk but also threw out two base stealers.
