Foxhounds Take Series Opener

August 20, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
South Georgia Peanuts News Release

The South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, lost the opening game of a three-game set with the Aiken Foxhounds Monday night. The Peanuts kept trying to come back but an early deficit sunk South Georgia.

After a scoreless first inning, the Peanuts went down in order in the top of the second before Aiken put up a four-spot in the bottom of the second. Peanuts starting pitcher Dumas Garcia loaded the bases in the inning thanks to an error and two walks and the big hit was a two-run single off the bat of Garth McKinney.

The Peanuts did get a run back in the top of the fourth when Curtis Goodwin Sr. scored on a Mike Caruso sacrifice fly. The Foxhounds answered with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. The Peanuts' bats got going a bit in the fifth. Four runs came across Jasha Balcom and Tug Gillingham each came up with an RBI in the inning.

Leading by only one run, the Foxhounds added a run in the bottom of the fifth off a Kelly Hunt lead-off home run. The home run was Hunt's league-leading 23rd of the season. While the Peanuts still only trailed by two, Aiken put it away in the eight by scoring three runs. In the ninth, South Georgia was able to load the bases and score three runs but a double-play with the bases loaded ended the game.

The Peanuts look to even the series on Tuesday night. Jerome Gamble will get the start for the Peanuts. First pitch is set for 7:05. The game can be heard in South Georgia on "1450 The Fan" or online at southgeorgiapeanuts.com.
