Youngstown SteelHounds News Release
Youngstown, OH - The Youngstown SteelHounds (8-10-1) won their second straight game in exciting fashion as the Hounds and Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees combined to score five goals in a 4:22 stretch of the second period en route to a 4-3 Hounds victory in the Chevrolet Centre. Jonathan Gagnon scored a pair of goals and Scott Barnes scored the game winner and added an assist. David St. Germain earned the win with 40 saves.
Special teams were the story of the first period as each team tallied with the man advantage. Youngstown started the scoring with Jonathan Gagnon scoring his fourth goal of the season, assisted by Jeff Alcombrack and Chris Richards. The goal y Gagnon gives him points in each of the six games he has played with the Hounds (4-3=7). Richards extends his point streak to seven straight games with the assists (3-7=10). The Killer Bees tied the game with a power play goal of their own scored by Trevor Weisgerber, his seventh goal of the season and fifth on the power play. The assists were credited to Daymen Bencharski and Nathan Rosychuk at the 11:56 mark of the first period. The Bees outshot the Hounds 14-13 in the period as David St. Germain made 13 saves and Evan Lindsay made 12 saves.
The offense showed up in the second period or maybe the defense was just offensive for a five minute stretch. The Bees started the scoring with their second power play goal of the game scored once again by Weisgerber, assisted by Bencharski and Clay Plume at the 2:16. Youngstown's Gagnon answered with his second goal of the game less than a minute after the Bees had gained the lead. The flow of the game went quickly to the offense as Rio Grande took the lead right back just 31 seconds later when Aaron Phillips got credit for a strange goal that seemed to bounce out from the corner, hit some traffic, redirect off the scoreboard and find its way behind St. Germain giving the Bees a 3-2 lead. Youngstown answered just 19 seconds later with Jeff Christian scoring his 19th goal of the season, assisted by Richards and Nicholson (the goal extended Christian's point streak to seven straight games). The Hounds took the lead back with Scott Barnes taking a J.F. Labarre feed and burying it over Lindsay for his eighth goal of the season, assisted by Labarre and Kris Mallette. The goal chased Lindsay from the game in favor of Terry Dunbar.
The third period didn't have any goals but had plenty of excitement as the Hounds had to hold on against the swarming Bees who outshot the Hounds 18-4 in the final frame as St. Germain put on a clinic stopping everything he faced. Youngstown had to face a Rio Grande power play in the final two and a half minutes added to the mix an extra skater as the Bees pulled Dunbar. St. Germain earned his pay stopping everything in sight and freezing the puck whenever he could en route to his second straight winning decision.
The Bees outshot the Hounds 43-25 in the game as St. Germain finished with 40 saves. Dunbar stopped all eight shots he faced in the game and Lindsay took the loss dropping to 7-6-1 making 13 saves.
The two teams will go at it again tomorrow night with face-off scheduled for 7:05 PM. Tomorrow's game will be the first College Night where students with a valid college ID get a $16.00 ticket for $8.00 and 12 oz. draft beers.
