Youngstown SteelHounds News Release

Youngstown, OH. - The Youngstown SteelHounds (14-19-1) couldn't find the offensive touch on Friday night at the Chevrolet Centre in front of 4,964 fans as they fell to the Wichita Thunder (19-10-5) by a final score of 2-0. Jon Volp made 32 saves earning his first professional shutout. Tab Lardner and Kris Wiebe scored goals for the Thunder who shut the SteelHounds out for just the second time this season.

Wichita had a lot of jump early getting the better of the scoring chances outshooting the Hounds 9-6 in the period. For the second straight game, Wichita got on the board first scoring just after a power play had expired. Tab Lardner scored the goal, his 13th of the season, off a terrific feed from Tyler Liebel from behind the net. Daniel Tetrault and Liebel drew the assists on Lardner's goal scored at the 2:43 mark. David St. Germain stopped eight shots in the period and Jon Volp who was relatively untested turned away six shots.

The Thunder added to their lead in the second period taking advantage of their sixth power play of the game. A scramble in front of the net led to Kris Wiebe poking in his ninth goal of the season and fourth point of the season against Youngstown. The goal was scored at the 4:56 mark assisted by Tetrault and Jason Duda. The Thunder outshot the Hounds 15-11 in the period as St. Germain remained sharp allowing just the power play blemish. Volp left the game with an injury for 51 seconds giving Sebastien Laplante an opportunity to make two saves. Volp had 15 saves through two periods.

The SteelHounds couldn't find the back of the net despite outshooting Wichita 17-4 in the period. Jon Volp saw everything stopping all shot he faced earning his first shutout of the season and sixth victory.

Youngstown concludes the three-game set with Wichita tomorrow night at the Chevrolet Centre with face-off scheduled for 7:05 PM (EST).
