The Ohio Valley Greyhounds of the UIF are pleased to announce the signing of former Wheeling Park and Fairmont State standout linebacker Ed Smith (6-3,230). Smith returns to the Greyhounds after a brief stint with the Raleigh Rebels of the AIFL. Smith actually entered training camp with the Hounds this season before being released. Prior to joining Ohio Valley the Former Fairmont State Falcon had signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Smith ended his senior season at Fairmont State with 93 total tackles, including 54 solo stops. He had six sacks, 18 tackles for losses, one interception and one fumble recovery. He led the Falcons in tackles and finished tied for second in the West Virginia Conference in tackles per game with 9.3.
He also finished the regular season tied for 32nd in the nation in NCAA Division II in solo tackles per game (5.4) and 29th in the country in tackles for losses.
For his college career Smith compiled 229 total tackles, including 141 solo stops. He had 26.5 career tackles for losses and 8 career quarterback sacks. He finished his career as a two-time, first-team All-WVC performer.
Smith garnered several postseason awards this past fall on the national level. He was named honorable mention All-America by D2Football.com, selected to the 2003 Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Northeast Region Football TeamÂfs second-team defensive unit and named to the Don Hansen Football GazetteÂfs All-Northeast Region third-team defense.
He also took part in the 2004 Cactus Bowl as a member of the Division II East All-Stars. That game took place Jan. 9 in Kingsville, Texas. The West All-Stars defeated the East All-Stars, 30-27, in overtime.
