Hot Rods Edged by TinCaps in Playoff Opener
September 6, 2017 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY -- To open up the 2017 Midwest League Playoffs, the Bowling Green Hot Rods were edged in Game one of the best-of-three series, losing by a score of 2-1 on Wednesday night at Bowling Green Ballpark.
With a pitchers duel between both staffs, a two-run homer in the second inning from TinCaps catcher A.J. Kennedy against Hot Rods starter Mikey York (L, 0-1) was all the run support Fort Wayne needed.
In a losing effort, York along with RHP Jayson McKinley and Remin Ramos combined to strikeout 18 batters, matching a season-high and a franchise record for most strikeouts in a game. The Hot Rods pitchers also struck out 18 TinCaps hitters on the opening night of the 2017 regular season at Bowling Green Ballpark on April 6. They also lost that game.
Offensively, the Hot Rods were blanked by highly-touted TinCaps right Michel Baez (W, 1-0) through seven innings. Baez struck out nine Hot Rods without giving up a run.
Bowling Green tacked on their only run of the game in the eighth inning after infielder Miles Mastrobuoni singled and then scored on a two-out RBI double by outfielder Garrett Whitley.
With the loss, the Hot Rods fell to 1-9 in the playoffs all-time and 0-5 in Game 1's during the playoffs. They are 0-5 against Fort Wayne in the postseason since the two teams met first in 2011.
The Hot Rods will try to save their season in an elimination game for them against the TinCaps at Parkview Field on Thursday.
Game two of the best-of-three series will see Bowling Green sending RHP Adrian Navas to the mound while TinCaps are countering with RHP Pedro Avila.
First pitch is at 7:05 PM local time. The game is being played in eastern time.
