Kentucky Horsemen News Release
Lexington, KY, January 21, 2004 â Bonner is back. The Lexington Horsemen today announced that they have signed quarterback Dusty Bonner for the 2004 NIFL season. Bonner will begin working with the team at the Horsemen's final tryout on Saturday, January 24.
"This is a great way to start the new year," said Horsemen President Ron Borkowski. "Dusty was so important to our success last year both on and off the field. He's a heck of a talent and a wonderful person. We couldn't be happier to have him back in Lexington."
Bonner was named NIFL Atlantic Conference Offensive Most Valuable Player after finishing the 2003 season with 297 completions in 450 pass attempts for 2,833 yards, 63 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions. He finished second in the NIFL in pass rating (109.1), third in total offense (2,884 yards), third in passing yards (202.4 per game), and third in touchdown passes (63). Behind Bonner, the Horsemen offense produced 53.1 points per game, third-best in the league.
A former standout at the University of Kentucky and Valdosta State, Bonner led the Southeastern Conference in completions, completion percentage, and touchdowns in 1999 before transferring from UK to Valdosta. He went on to win the Harlan Hill Trophy, awarded to the most outstanding player in NCAA Division II, twice, becoming only the second player in the history of the award to do so. Bonner also threw for 55 touchdowns in 2000, breaking the single-season Division II record.
The Horsemen finished their inaugural season with a 9-6 record and a trip to the playoffs, where they were defeated in the first round by eventual 2003 NIFL Champion Ohio Valley.
