Kentucky Horsemen News Release

Lexington, KY - The Lexington Horsemen of United Indoor Football (UIF) struggled in the red zone on Saturday, going just three-of-seven from inside the 20-yard line, and their late-game comeback came up short in a 38-31 loss to RiverCity in Rupp Arena.

The Horsemen (5-5) relied on a balanced attack behind dual-threat quarterback Harry Lewis, who made his first professional start at the signal-caller position. Trailing 38-18, the Horsemen's John Cooper caught two touchdown passes from Kewan Dewberry to bring Lexington within seven, 38-31, with 1:18 left, but RiverCity (6-4) recovered the Horsemen's on-side kick.

"Harry came in and did what we wanted him to do tonight," Horsemen head coach Mike Zuckerman said. "We wanted him to use his athletic ability and he was able to do that tonight. The frustrating thing tonight was that we got it inside the five-yard line, but couldn't get it in the end zone. We moved the ball so well down the field, but we just staggered inside the five."

Lewis completed 10-of-21 passes for 92 yards with a touchdown, while Dewberry came in during the fourth quarter to go six-of-eight for 86 yards with two TD strikes, both to Cooper. Cooper was the team's leading receiver, catching six passes for 84 yards with two scores. Lewis also ran nine times for 62 yards.

The Rage got on the board first as Muhammad Abdulquaadir broke several tackles and rushed 20 yards to the end zone for the score to give RiverCity a 7-0 lead at the eight-minute mark of the opening period. The Horsemen responded with 5:51 left in the opening quarter as Lewis found Chad Spencer from 22 yards out to bring Lexington within one, 7-6. The Rage added another touchdown before the end of the first period as quarterback Anthony Fisher ran the ball in from eight yards out to extend RiverCity's advantage to 14-6 with 2:36 left.

Askew opened the second quarter with a one-yard plunge for touchdown to cap a four-play, 30-yard drive and bring Lexington as close as one, 14-13, with 14:56 remaining until intermission. RiverCity's Joe Bevis answered with a one-yard run of his own at the 9:28 mark to put the Rage ahead 21-13. Collin Barber connected on a 24-yard field goal with 5:17 to go until halftime before the Rage's Derek Kutz had a resounding response with a 47-yard field goal of his own at the 1:47 mark of the second quarter to put River City ahead 24-16. Kenya Williams recorded a safety on a blocked field goal with 49 seconds until intermission to cut Lexington's halftime deficit to 24-18.

In a much lower-scoring second half, the Rage continued to protect their lead. Moses Regular caught a 30-yard pass from Fisher with 14:30 to go in the third quarter to put River City ahead 31-18. With 8:58 left in the game, Bevis again found the end zone, this time from two yards out to go up by 20, 38-18. The Horsemen responded with 6:10 to go in the game as Cooper caught a 10-yard pass from Dewberry to bring Lexington within 13, 38-25.

The Horsemen return to action Saturday as they remain at home to play host to Bloomington. Kick-off in Rupp Arena is slated for 7:30 p.m. EDT and the game will be carried live on WLRO 101.5 FM and WVLK 590 AM with Randy Wilson.
