Honu Sweep BeachBoys in Hilo Series

The North Shore Honu capped a successful trip to the Big Island with a 9-4 victory over Waikiki, and also notched the three-game series sweep of the BeachBoys with the win this afternoon at Hilo's Francis Wong Stadium. The Honu improved to a league-best 13-6 mark, while the reeling BeachBoys fell to 8-11 and have now lost eight of their last nine contests.

Michael Griffin went 3-5 with two home runs and three RBIs to lead a potent North Shore offense that pounded 12 hits on the afternoon.

Jamie Romak hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the home half of the second inning over the scoreboard in left-center field, to give the Honu its first lead of the contest. Ensuing batter Brad Corley doubled to the right-center field gap, and after advancing to third on a balk by BeachBoys starter Jared Lansford (0-2, 7.31 ERA), scored and increased North Shore's lead to 3-0 when Masahiro Nagata grounded into a double play.

Jeff Kindel ripped a double off the left field wall with two out in the top of the third frame to score Antoan Richardson, and put Waikiki on the board. Dan Murphy followed suit with a double off nearly the same spot on the wall, plating Kindel with his fifth two-bagger of the campaign, and cutting the deficit to 3-2. Richardson stole three bases on the evening, and now leads the league with 10 thefts.

The Honu got the two runs back in the home half of the third when Jonathan Lucroy doubled in Shintaro Yoshida and Lou Santangelo on a line drive to the left-center field gap. Griffin hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to plate Nagata, and extend North Shore's lead to 7-2.

In the fifth inning, Murphy lined a single to right field which scored Richardson from third, and narrowed the gap to 7-3. Lucas Duda led off the sixth frame for Waikiki with a solo homer, and brought his team within three runs of the lead.

North Shore starter Bud Norris earned his first win of the season after striking out six and surrendering two runs on three hits in four innings. Lansford took the loss, allowing seven runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Both squads will spend tomorrow touring the Big Island, and will return home to Oahu in the afternoon. There are no HWB games scheduled for tomorrow.
