West Oahu CaneFires News Release
The West Oahu CaneFires held on for the 6-4, seven-inning victory over the Honolulu Sharks in the finale of a three-game set this afternoon at Waipahu's Hans L'Orange Park. The Sharks had the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the bottom of the seventh frame, but Castle High graduate Reid Santos got Kyler Burke to pop out to second base, and earned his first HWB save in the process.
Ian Gac, Chad Tracy, Jamie Hoffmann and K.C. Herren each collected two of West Oahu's ten hits, and drove in a run apiece.
The CaneFires (6-12-1) took a 3-1 lead in the third inning thanks to solo home runs from Gac and Tracy. Tracy's long ball to left field moved the son of Pittsburgh Pirates manager Jim Tracy into a tie for the league lead in home runs (4) with North Shore sluggers Jeramy Laster and Mat Gamel. West Oahu would add three insurance runs in the fifth frame which proved very necessary down the stretch.
Honolulu (10-8-1) received two hits and an RBI from Argenis Diaz, who bumped his league-leading batting average up to .407. Catcher Matt Wieters notched his sixth double of the campaign in the losing effort. The Sharks did their best to capitalize on five seven-inning walks issued by reliever Garrett White, but scored just two runs as Santos left the bases loaded.
Keisaku Itokazu (2-0, 2.18 ERA) earned the win after tossing six innings in which he allowed two runs on six hits and struck out five. Jimmy James (3.18 ERA) fell to 1-1 on the season, allowing three runs in four innings.
Both squads have the day off tomorrow.
