West Oahu CaneFires News Release
West Oahu pounded out 15 hits en route to a 5-1 victory over Honolulu this afternoon at Hans L'Orange Park.
The Hawaii Winter Baseball West Division champion CaneFires received three hits apiece from Kyle Peter, Mark Hallberg and Adam Loewen, and have now won five consecutive games.
The CaneFires (18-14) took advantage of seven Honolulu walks and three errors while peppering the Sharks pitchers for 14 singles. Despite stranding eight runners on base, West Oahu finished 6-for-12 as a team with runners in scoring position.
In the victory, Hallberg notched his 21st RBI of the season, while Matt Inouye, a former University of Hawaii standout who was previously a catcher with Honolulu before being transferred to the CaneFires roster last week, picked up his first RBI of the year.
Michael Taylor paced the Sharks (16-17) with a double and an RBI in defeat.
West Oahu starter Fumikazu Kimura (1-2) notched the victory, tossing 5 2/3 innings and allowing a run on three hits and striking out four. Reliever Andrew Hess chipped in 2 1/3 scoreless innings, and Sean Gleason closed out the ninth.
Honolulu starter Johnny Venters (2-3) took the loss after allowing an earned run on nine hits through five innings, and striking out four.
Both squads have tomorrow off, and return to action Friday.
