Honkers Fall to Willmar for First Home Loss of 2013 Season

(Rochester, MN)- The Rochester Honkers were defeated 5-1 by Willmar at Mayo Field Monday night for their first home loss of the 2013 season.

Willmar scored in each of the first three innings to build an early 4-0 lead for starting pitcher TJ Whidby. The Stingers started the first inning with a walk and a single, but the Honkers turned their first of three double plays on the night to record the first two outs. Michael Suchy delivered with a two-out single on the following pitch to put the first run on the board. A single by Chris Barnett brought in two more runs in the second inning. The Stingers fourth run of the night came across when Suchy came around to score from second on an infield single that was stopped by a diving Toby Thomas (Pensacola State,) but Thomas' throw was unable to get Suchy at home plate.

Willmar provided an insurance run in the fifth inning for Whidby (1-0,) who retired 14 consecutive batters before allowing a double to Mitch Anderson (Rochester Community and Technical College) in the eighth inning. He earned the win with 7.1 innings, allowing one run on five hits and striking out four.

Jon Woodcock (Crowder College) took the loss (1-1) for Rochester. He allowed five runs, three earned, in five innings of work. Elliott Engle (Doane College) had his best outing of the season as he pitched four scoreless inning in relief. He allowed three hits in his longest appearance of the season.

Tucker Tharp picked up a RBI for a third consecutive game when he delivered a two-out single to score Anderson in the eighth inning to put the Honkers on the board. Thomas led the Honkers offense with three hits. He joined Anderson and Jarad Watts (Bethel University) as members of the Honkers with doubles.

Rochester (4-2) will host Willmar (3-3) for the second game of a two game series Tuesday, June 4, at 7:05 p.m. at Mayo Field. Brandon Stennis (Doane College) is slated to make his second start of the season. He struck out ten batters in his first start against Mankato.
