Homers Not Enough On Third Of July

July 4, 2019 - California League (CalL1)
Lancaster JetHawks News Release

LANCASTER, Calif. - A season-best crowd of 5,532 came to The Hangar for the third of July as the JetHawks fell to the Inland Empire 66ers, 14-7. Lancaster hit four home runs, but could not complete another comeback in the series finale.

The tone was set early, as Inland Empire (4-9, 31-52) scored four times in the first inning. Gareth Morgan hit a three-run home run to get the visitors on the board. Ten of Morgan's 12 home runs this season have come at Lancaster's expense.

The 66ers added three more runs in the second inning. Ryan Rolison (2-5) was taken out after giving up seven runs (six earned) in two innings. The JetHawks used five total pitchers in the game.

Lancaster (9-5, 43-39) could not come back from the early deficit despite a strong offensive showing. Luis Castro homered in the first inning as part of a three-hit night. It was his 19th long ball of the season, which leads the Cal League.

Cooper Criswell (2-6) limited the damage for Inland Empire, giving up three runs in five innings. The JetHawks jumped on the bullpen in the sixth inning. Casey Golden and Taylor Snyder each hit home runs, and Matt Hearn added an RBI triple.

Todd Czinege hit the last of Lancaster's home runs in the eighth inning. All four of the blasts came with nobody on base. Inland Empire hit just two home runs, but the 66ers got hits from every starter.

The winning streak came to an end at four games, but the JetHawks still won the series. Lancaster is 11-6 versus Inland Emipre, and they remain atop the Second Half standings in the South Division.

Lancaster hits the road for the Fourth of July, starting a three-game series in Lake Elsinore Thursday night. Antonio Santos (3-3) gets the start in the opener against Reiss Knehr (2-1). First pitch from The Diamond is 7:00 pm.
