
Home-and-home series split as Ignition loses to Cougars

(Southfield, Mich., March 24, 2007) - The Detroit Ignition (17-11) fell to the California Cougars (7-22), 18-12 at Stockton Arena in Stockton, California on Saturday but held on to first place in the Major Indoor Soccer standings with a one-half game lead over the Philadelphia KiXX. The game-winning goal was scored by Enrique Tovar at 14:22 of the third quarter of play. Detroit was led by forward Jamar Beasley who registered point number 104 of the 2006-07 season in the loss. Detroit will head to Philadelphia on Saturday, March 30 to take on the Philadelphia KiXX with first place on the line. Game-time is slated for 7:05 pm ET.
Cougars forward Enrique Tovar started the night's scoring with a two-point goal at 2:11 to hand California the early 2-0 lead. Midfielder Brian Farber extended the California lead to 4-0 with a two-point goal at 5:20, putting it past Ignition netminder Sanaldo for the score. Craig Scheer kept the Cougars rolling with a two-point goal at 6:12 to bring the club's lead to 6-0. Farber tallied his second of the night, a two-pointer, at 8:13 as the Cougars lead moved to 8-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The Ignition and League-leading scorer Jamar Beasley got the board early with a two-point, power play goal just 53 seconds into the second quarter to bring the Cougars advantage to 8-2. Beasley registered his second goal of the night, another two-pointer, at 1:46 as the first-year club cut the Cougars lead down to 8-4. On his first shift since returning from a stress fracture, midfielder Doug Rice scored a two-point goal at 3:05 to bring the California lead to just 8-6. Ignition defender Josh Rife scored Detroit's fourth unanswered two-point goal with just six seconds remaining to tie the game at 8-8 going into halftime.
Farber scored his third goal of the game, a two-pointer, for California as the score moved to a 10-8 Cougars lead. Forward Elvir Kafedzic scored the two-point goal for the Cougars at 3:20 of the third quarter as California's lead stretched to 12-8. Tovar tallied his second goal of the contest, a two-pointer, at 14:22 as the Cougars advantage moved to 14-8 at the end of the third quarter.
Cougars defender Nelson Santana buried a two-point goal into the back of the net at 2:23 as the California momentum continued, moving the club's lead to 16-8. Ignition defender Jonathan Greenfield put a two-pointer in at 3:50 as the club moved the Cougars advantage down to just 16-10. Forward Mike apple kept the Detroit offensive string going with a two-point goal his own at the 5:17 mark to bring the Ignition within four points as the California lead fell to 16-12. Farber scored his fourth two-point goal of the night at 11:10 as the Cougars registered the 18-12 victory.
