
Farber, Hall Prove Too Much For Detroit

(STOCKTON, CA) - The California Cougars and the Detroit Ignition hit the field for the second time in as many nights tonight at the Stockton Arena. The two teams faced one another last night in Detroit before returning to California for the rematch.
The highlight for the Cougars last night was the scoring of midfielder Brian Farber, who posted a hat trick in the club's effort.
The first quarter of the rematch was entirely dominated by the California offense.
California drew the first points of the contest 2:09 into the game on a ping pong shot and save sequence involving Cougars midfielder Brian Farber, forward Enrique Tovar and Ignition goalkeeper Sanaldo. Farber started the action with Tovar finishing for the 2-0 lead and Farber earning the assist
Farber got his chance on a breakaway run that resulted in two more for the Cougars just over a minute later.
Veteran California midfielder Craig Scheer pushed the Cougars further ahead as he took a Nelson Santana assist and converted it into a 6-0 score against the Ignition.
Farber continued a scoring run that started last night with a hat trick for the speedy former Oregon Duck and continued tonight with an unassisted goal past Sanaldo to make it an 8-0 Cougars' advantage.
The second quarter turned out to favor the Ignition.
Detroit interrupted the Cougars scoring drive as MISL scoring leader Jamar Beasley slipped a Chile Farias assist past Cougars goalkeeper Bayard Elfvin just :53 seconds into the second quarter to make it an 8-2 game.
Beasley scored again just over a minute later on an assist from midfielder Novi Marojevic to cut the Cougars lead to four.
Ignition midfielder scored his first goal of the season with 3:04 seconds into the second quarter to make it an 8-6 contest.
Detroit ended the first half on a Josh Rife goal on a Kyt Selaidopoulos assist to even up the score at eight apiece going into the locker room.
California came out firing as Farber posted his second hat trick in as many nights by converting a Semir Mesanovic assist just over under a minute and a half into the second half into a 10-8 lead.
Continuing the scoring in the third quarter, California forward Elvir Kafedzic extended the lead over Detroit 3:19 into the half.
California continued to dominate the third quarter as the Cougars pulled further ahead going up 14-8 on team points leader Tovar's goal with :38 seconds to go in the quarter on a Ryan Hall assist.
The Cougars kept the pressure on the Ignition in the fourth quarter starting with a goal from Nelson Santana at the 2:22 mark in the fourth quarter on a Farber assist.
Detroit ended the Cougars unanswered goal streak at four on an unassisted goal from Ignition defender Jonathan Greenfield just over a minute and a half later. The scoring continued with 9:43 remaining from forward Mike Apple on an assist from former Cougar Bill Sedgewick to make it a 16-12 contest.
Pushing the Cougars to the victory line, Farber blasted his fourth game of the night and his seventh of the last two consecutive contests to put California up 18-12 going into the final three minutes of the contest.
With time running down and three minutes on the game clock, Detroit pulled Sanaldo in favor of Marojevic as the Ignition's Sixth Attacker. Despite a barrage from the Ignition offense, the California defense held ground and ended the contest with an 18-12 victory.
The Cougars end the 2006-07 MISL season next Saturday as the club hosts the Milwaukee Wave in a nationally televised game on the VERSUS network. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
