Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS -- Steve Hirschfeld has now thrown 15 straight scoreless innings -- and 21 without an earned run -- as the Miracle defeated Dunedin 6-3 at Hammond Stadium on Monday.
Hirschfeld (4-4) went five innings, scattering four hits. The right- hander walked one and struck out four in his first start after the first complete-game shutout of his career. Blair Erickson hurled one and two-thirds before he left after a Brad McElroy line drive appeared to strike him on the bottom. Joe Testa came in and went one and one- thirds. Testa kept the lead intact but surrendered a two-run homer to Jon Jaspe as the left-hander gave up the first earned runs of his 2009 with the Miracle. Testa left after one and one-third having allowed three runs (two earned), three hits, one walk, and one strikeout.
Loek van Mil worked a perfect ninth, fanning one, for his second save.
After struggling with runners on base, having left 17 in the first two games of the series, the Miracle stranded just six on Monday on its way to plating six runs. Jair Fernandez kicked off the scoring with an RBI double in the second with two outs. Estarlin de los Santos (2- for-3, two runs, double, walk) and Ben Revere (2-for-4, two runs, triple, RBI) had multihit games while Evan Bigley had a two-RBI double.
Ryan Page (6-9) took the loss for Dunedin in six innings of work. The lefty gave up three earned runs, four total, on seven hits in six innings. He didn't walk anyone and struck out two. Alan Farina gave up two earned runs on two hits in two innings while walking two and striking out one in relief.
The final game of the four-game set will start at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday in a matchup between Andrew Liebel and Michael Tarsi.
