Hillsboro Hops News Release
TODAY: The Hops open a five-game homestand against Seattle's Northwest League affiliate, the Everett Aquasox..
YESTERDAY: Grant Heyman hit a three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning, and that would be all the support the trio of Ben Eckels, Dustin Loggins and Zac Curtis would need in a 3-1 win at Boise. Eckels went 6.1 innings, allowing 5 hits and one run, walking one and (for the second straight start) striking out eight.
Loggins struck out four in 1.2 innings, and Curtis whiffted two in the 9th to earn his fourth save.
Hillsboro took two of three in Boise.
ROADIES: Dating back to the 2013 season (when they won their final 10 road games), Hillsboro has now won 16 of their last 18 away from Ron Tonkin Field.
THIS IS MORE LIKE IT: Yesterday, the Hops recorded their 10th victory in the season's 16th game. In 2013, the Hops didn't record their tenth win until their 35th game. If the Hops win today, they'll have as many wins (11) as they had the entire first half in 2013.
HELLO OLD FRIENDS: Two players have been added to Hillsboro's roster, both returnees from 2013: pitcher Austin Platt and corner infielder George Roberts. Both players had been with Class-A South Bend in the Midwest League.
ALL-TIME VS. EVERETT: The Hops are 7-8 all-time vs. the Aquasox, 4-1 in 2014. Hillsboro took four of five in this year's season- opening series at Everett, winning the final 4 games.
Last year, the Hops went 3-7 vs. Everett during Hillsboro's inaugural NWL season. Hillsboro lost four of five in Everett from June 21-24, 2013, despite out- scoring the Sox during the series. Everett took three of five at Ron Tonkin Field from July 26-30, 2013.
Incredibly, the Sox won the final three games of that series by an identical 6-0 score.
AT LEAST WE DIDN'T KEEP YOU UP LATE: In 2013, the Hops had an affinity for long day games at home. On Sunday, July 7, Hillsboro beat Vancouver 5-4 in 19 innings. On Sunday, July 21, the Hops beat Spokane 6-5 in 13 innings. On Friday, July 26, Hillsboro beat Everett 4-3 in 11 innings. And Sunday, Aug. 25, the Hops beat Boise 6-5 in 10 inn.
Four of the Hops' six day games in 2013 went extra innings, with Hillsboro winning all four. (Overall, the Hops were 7-3 in extras in 2013, 5-0 at home.) Yes, 4 of 6 day home games went extra innings, and just 1 of 32 night home games went extras.
The Hops were 5-1 overall in home day games in 2013, including both regulation and extra-inn. games.
A STAR-STUDDED STAFF: See details later in these notes regarding manager J.R. House, pitching coach Doug Drabek, hitting coach Mark Grace and special consultant Ben Petrick.
ON THE AIR: Hops games can be heard live on Rip City Radio 620 AM in Portland, and online at www.foxsportsradio620.com. Mobile listeners should download the iHeartRadio app. Today's game begins at 4:05, with pregame at 3:35.
