
Hillcats Miss Sweep on Walk-Off

Zebulon, NC - Jesus Aguilar delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to end a 3 hour and 24 minute game, that also included a 22-minute rain delay. The Carolina Mudcats ousted the Hillcats 7-6. Lynchburg fell back below .500 (21-22) and failed to complete the sweep of the Mudcats.
Michael Spina gave the Hillcats the early lead with an RBI-double in the top of the second inning. He also came around to score three batters later on an infield single for Chad Comer. Lynchburg led 2-0.
RHP Michael Lee started for the Hillcats, pitching through trouble but holding the Mudcats scoreless through the first three innings. He then gave up four runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-out three-run homer for Tony Wolters. Carolina went up 4-2.
Lynchburg tied the game right away in the fifth. Bobby Stevens singled with one out. He stole second and advanced to third base on a wild throw into center field. He scored on Emerson Landoni's groundout to second base. Dan Brewer then drew a two-out walk. He stole second base as well, and scored on an Edward Salcedo double to tie the game 4-4.
With the game still tied in the seventh inning, Brewer drove in Landoni with an RBI-single. The Hillcats led 5-4. They added an insurance run in the eighth inning. Matt Weaver grounded out to second base, scoring pinch-runner Nick Ahmed from third base.
Leading 6-4 going into the bottom of the eighth, the Hillcats brought in RHP Ryan Weber. Ahmed went out to play shortstop, moving Landoni to second base, and Weaver to first base for Michaeld Spina who was replaced by Ahmed. Weber struck out his first batter before giving up a single to Ronny Rodriguez. The next batter, Anthony Gallas, hit a chopper up the middle. Ahmed charged toward second base went after an in between hop but missed. An error was charged to Ahmed and runners ended up at first and third with one out. Rodriguez would score on an RBI-groundout for Dwight Childs, while Gallas moved to second base. Then Delvi Cid drove in Gallas with a single to tie the game at 6-6.
The game went tied into the bottom of the ninth. Weber was back on the mound for Lynchburg. He retired on batter around three singles, including a walk-off RBI-single for Aguilar to end the game.
RHP Grant Sides (2-0) earned the win for Carolina. He gave up one run in two innings of relief. Weber (0-2) suffered the loss. He surrendered three runs, one earned, in an inning and two-thirds.
The Hillcats are now 21-22 in the second half heading into an off-day on Monday.
Traveling back out on the road Tuesday, the Hillcats will begin a three-game series with the Frederick Keys at Harry Grove Stadium. First pitch is at 7:00pm. RHP Aaron Northcraft (8-9, 3.74) will start for the Hillcats against LHP Matt Bywater (0-1, 5.63) for the Keys.
