Hillcats Lose Back-And-Forth Affair

Lynchburg, VA- The Hillcats committed three errors Wednesday night, which led to two key unearned runs, and fell 6-3 to the Frederick Keys.

The Keys took an early lead, scoring a run in each of the second and third innings. The first run was created when Tyler Townsend reached second on a two-base error by Hillcats center fielder Todd Cunningham. He was sacrificed to third and then scored on an RBI single by Jacob Julius.

The Hillcats struck in the third. Barrett Kleinknecht, Braeden Schlehuber and Keenan Wiley led off the inning with three straight singles. All three came in to score in the inning, giving the Hillcats a 3-2 lead.

Frederick tied up the game in the fifth. Brian Ward led off the inning with a single, and moved station-to-station until Steve Bumbry singled him home.

The Keys took the lead for good in the seventh. Back-to-back doubles by Dale Mollenhauer and Garabez Rosa gave the Keys the lead. Rosa would later score on an error by Lynchburg starting pitcher Zeke Spruill, giving the Keys a 5-3 lead. Spruill (1-4) gave up five runs, only three earned, in seven innings pitched.

The Keys tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning, and won 6-3. Frederick starter Nathan Moreau (2-3) picked up the win, and Sean Gleason worked the ninth for his seventh save.

The Hillcats fell to 11-19 and Frederick improved to 17-14.

The teams will play the rubber game of the three-game series Thursday night, with the first pitch at 6:05 pm. Cory Rasmus (1-2) will take the mound for the Hillcats while Frederick will counter with Rick Zagone (0-0). It's the first Theme Thursday of the season in Lynchburg, Beach Night, and gates will open at 5:00 pm.
