Hillcats drop opener in extras

The Nationals took the middle-game of a three-game series with the Hillcats with a 9-2 win at Pfitzner Stadium. Potomac scored early and often to take the three-game series with wins in the first two games of the set.

Potomac struck in the first inning for the second straight night and took a 3-0 lead. Derek Norris started the scoring with an RBI double and Bill Rhinehart followed with a two-run home run to complete the scoring in the three-run inning. Lynchburg bounced back in the third inning with a two-run frame to close the gap to a run at 3-2.

The P-Nats packed on to their advantage though with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Steve Lombardozzi drove in a run with a base hit in the inning. The P-Nats second baseman reached safely in his first eight plate appearances in the series. Potomac tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a three-run homer by Derek Norris to open things up with an 8-2 score and chase starter Mark Serrano from the ballgame. Another run came in the sixth with an RBI triple by Mike Burgess and that made it a 9-2 contest.

The loss went to Serrano (2-5) ho allowed a career-high seven earned run for Lynchburg (28-41). The Hillcats have now dropped five of their last six games. The win went to starter Jesse Estrada (3-1) for Potomac (31-38). The series concludes on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. at Pfitzner Stadium.
