Highlanders to Suspend Operations

July 11, 2019 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada) - Cape Breton Highlanders News Release

The Cape Breton Highlanders are suspending all operations for the upcoming 2019/20 NBLC Season. The Highlanders ownership group has worked diligently to secure more capital since coming off their most successful season making the play-offs for the first time since inception. Although there has been some discussions the club has been unsuccessful in attracting additional investment to adequately prepare for the upcoming season and as a result has informed the NBLC they will be opting out of the 2019/20 season.

The club stated that while the group still believes that a successful operation is viable it has become clear that a different approach is necessary and this approach will necessitate additional operating funds in order to be successful.

Despite any positive reaction from the community as a whole, the expected level of ticket sales and local sponsorship did not fully materialize as anticipated with paid ticket sales actually decreasing over the 3 year period. Levingston believes" a different approach to marketing the franchise could be successful, however it will require significant new investment and the franchise does not have sufficient time to source these funds before League stipulated deadlines.

Levingston whom has spent the past 4 years to help groom the club said "the entire Highlanders organization wanted to extend their appreciation to all its fans, sponsors, staff, volunteers, and CBRM specifically C200 for providing an excellent venue for the team and allowing us to present an exciting sports entertainment opportunity for the community.

The Highlanders ownership group plans to spend the next several months refining the marketing business plans for the team and meeting with prospective investors to determine if there is a viable option to re-start operations for the following season.
