Memphis Xplorers News Release
SOUTHAVEN--- The arena football 2 (af2) league office announced today that Memphis Xplorers offensive specialist Kenny Higgins has been awarded the Cutters Catch of the Week. Higgins' prize catch occurred on a 30 yard touchdown pass from Brian Jones in the fourth quarter of the Xplorers' 62-26 win over Macon last Friday night.
The catch, Higgins' team leading ninth touchdown reception, was a one handed, full layout diving catch with Macon defensive specialist Leo Fenceroy applying good coverage.
"That was one of the best catches I have seen," Xplorers Head Coach Danton Barto said. "It was one handed with the defender draped on him and, don't forget, it was also on fourth down."
Higgins finished the game with six catches for 108 yards and two scores as the Xplorers improved to 4-1.
The six-foot-one, 180 pound Higgins currently leads the Xplorers in receptions with 34, receiving yards with 590 and touchdown receptions with 9. He also ranks sixth, first and ninth, respectively, in af2 in those categories.
Higgins is a rookie out of Toledo and a native of Long Beach, CA. He played the last two seasons of his college career at Toledo where his 46 receptions in his senior season of 2004 were third on the team.
This is the second weekly award for the Xplorers this season. Quarterback Brian Jones was the Schutt Offensive Player of the Week in Week Two. The other award winners for Week Five were: US Army Ironman of the Week Kevin Williams from Arkansas; Schutt Offensive Player of the Week Ryan Vena from Albany and ADT Defensive Player of the Week Alex Wallace of Bakersfield.
Higgins and the Xplorers will attempt to run their record to 5-1 this Saturday when they host the Manchester Wolves at the DeSoto Civic Center at 7 pm. It is the first of two Kids Night promotions where, with the purchase of one adult ticket, fans can get up to two children's (12 and under) tickets for free.
