Tulsa Drillers News Release
June 4, 2008 - With winds over 20 mph blowing out to left, there figured to be plenty of home runs hit in Wednesday's meeting between the Tulsa Drillers and the Springfield Cardinals. Unfortunately, that only applied to the Cardinals as they pounded three homers into the left field net on their way to a 4-1 victory over the Tulsa Drillers at Drillers Stadium.
The homers were the only real difference between starting pitchers Brandon Hynick and Tyler Herron. Both were outstanding in the less-than-ideal pitching conditions. The well-pitched game took only 2 hours and 20 minutes to complete.
Shane Robinson got the Cardinals on the board first with a solo home run to center field in the top of the third inning. It was the left fielder's third blast of the year.
Robinson has given the Drillers nightmares all season long. Before Wednesday's game, Robinson was batting .500 with 8 runs batted in against the Drillers.
Through five innings, Hynick had allowed only one run on six hits.
Mark Shorey doubled the Cardinals lead in the top of the sixth with a two-out solo shot to left. With Herron working on a one-hitter, the 2-0 lead looked like enough.
The wind didn't quite push Tyler Greene's hit in the top of the seventh out of the park. Instead Greene blasted a triple off the very top of the center field wall. Robinson drove home the run two batters later with a line drive at Drillers third baseman Tony Blanco who couldn't come up with the catch. The error was Blanco's second of the night.
The Cardinals took the 3-0 lead into the seventh as Herron had still limited Tulsa to only one hit. Blanco was able to double the hit total thanks to a line drive single.
The Cards third solo shot of the night came in top of the eighth by Steven Hill. His third homer of the year was the last batter Hynick would face.
Despite the loss, Hynick had a solid outing for the Drillers allowing just four runs in 7 and 2/3 innings.
Herron left the game after the seventh inning. He allowed just two hits, both singles, on his way to his second win of the year.
The Drillers finally broke through against Cardinals reliever Luke Gregerson in the bottom of the eighth. Following singles by Duke Sardinha and Eric Young Jr., Dexter Fowler put Tulsa on the board for the first time with a run-scoring single to right.
The run was too little too late as the Drillers fell 4-1.
Game two of the four-game series between the Drillers and Cardinals will match Ching-Lung Lo (4-6) for Tulsa against Jess Todd (1-1) for Springfield. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM at Drillers Stadium.
