Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ, September 22-The Newark Bears, in conjunction with La Tribuna and El Litoral newspapers, today announced that outfielder Jose Herrera has been selected as the Bears 2005 Player of the Year and that right-hander Pat Daneker has been selected as the Bears 2005 Pitcher of the Year. Both players received their awards in an on-field ceremony prior to the Bears final home game of the 2005 season this evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Also honored before the game was outfielder Wil Quintana, who was presented an inscribed gold watch courtesy of Carbo International Jewelers, for becoming the Bears all-time home run leader earlier this season.
Herrera, a former major league outfielder with the Oakland A's, batted a career-high .318 this season with Newark before having his contract purchased by the Baltimore Orioles organization on August 29th. With four games remaining in the season, Herrera is the Atlantic League's 6th leading hitter. Over 106 games with Newark, Herrera compiled 16 home runs, 19 doubles, 3 triples and 68 RBI. He also produced 41 multiple-hit games this year and played in the 2005 Atlantic League All Star Game.
The 29 year-old Daneker posted a 10-9 record with a 4.43 ERA in 28 starts this year. The former Chicago White Sox right-hander currently has the 10th best ERA in the Atlantic League and the 6th most victories. Daneker leads the Bears in victories, games started and innings pitched (164.2). He went 13 starts, from June 25th through August 30th, without suffering a defeat, posting 7 wins and 6 no-decisions during that stretch.
Quintana, who has played parts of the last four seasons with Newark, passed Pito Ramirez to become the Bears all-time home run leader with a solo blast in Somerset against the Patriots on August 11th this season. With a career-high 25 home runs on the season, Quintana currently tops the Bears home run list with 63 lifetime dingers. He is also second on the Bears all-time RBI list with 194, 12 behind Ramirez.
