Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

EDMONTON - Behind a dominant pitching performance by the WhiteWings' Brian Henschel, the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings avoided elimination by winning game four of the North American League championship series 5-1 against the Edmonton Capitals at TELUS Field.

Henschel pitched 7.2 innings, giving up no earned runs and just four hits. At one point, Henschel retired 17 straight batters.

The WhiteWings still trail the Edmonton Capitals 3-1 in the best-of-seven series, which will resume Tuesday night at TELUS Field in Edmonton.

The Edmonton Capitals managed to score first after WhiteWings' catcher Gabriel Ortiz threw the ball into the outfield trying to catch a runner stealing, allowing a runner at third base to score. The lone run for the Capitals went down as an unearned run and that was the only offense the entire night for the Caps.

The WhiteWings tied the score at 1 when Landon Camp homered in the second inning.

Two innings later, Brian Nichols gave the WhiteWings their first lead of the series when he hit a solo homerun to give the Wings a 2-1 lead.

With Henschel preventing the Capitals to even reach base, those were all the runs the WhiteWings needed to secure a win.

The WhiteWings tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh and eighth inning for good measure, allowing a comfortable 5-1 lead entering the ninth inning when Julio Castro came on to close the game out.

Game five of the championship series is set for Tuesday night at TELUS Field in Edmonton. Eric Blackwell (1-1, 5.54 ERA) will be on the mound for the WhiteWings against the Capitals' Lou Pote (2-1, 2.02 ERA).
