SAN JOSE (March 31, 2003) – Forward Maren Hendershot, who suffered a concussion in the San Jose CyberRays' exhibition loss March 22 to the Boston Breakers in Las Vegas, has decided to retire and pursue graduate school.

The CyberRays claimed former Atlanta Beat and Washington Freedom defender Amanda Cromwell, waived earlier to replace Hendershot on the team's reserve roster.

``The concussion was definitely a lot more serious than we originally thought,'' Hendershot said. ``I don't know how long it will take to recover.''

Hendershot, 24, from Colorado Springs appeared in nine games last season for the CyberRays, starting one. She scored her only WUSA goal June 15 in the 54th minute against the New York Power pulling the CyberRays into a 1-1 tie at that point. The CyberRays went on to win the game 3-2.

Hendershot, who played college soccer for Brigham Young, played for the Carolina Courage in the 2001 WUSA season and was picked up as a free agent in early 2002 by the CyberRays.

Cromwell, 32, was originally drafted by the Washington Freedom for the 2001 WUSA season and started 18 of the 20 games in which she appeared, scoring two goals. She started eight games of the 12 she appeared in last season for the Atlanta Beat, which had picked her up as a free agent. She played college soccer for Virginia and earned 55 caps for the U.S. national team from 1991 to '98 including playing in the 1995 Women's World Cup in Sweden.
