August 28, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Johnny Hellweg of the Nashville Sounds has been named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year, the league announced today.

Hellweg received more than half of the votes cast by the PCL field managers and representatives from the media in each city across the league. This marks the second time a Nashville pitcher has won the award (R.A. Dickey, 2007).

The 24-year-old is currently 11-5 with a 3.16 ERA. He is first in the league in opponent's batting average (.226) and winning percentage (.688), and is second in both ERA and wins. In 23 starts and 119.2 innings pitched, he has only allowed five home runs. Hellweg has also amassed 84 strikeouts, good for second-most for the Sounds.

After starting the season 1-4, the right-hander has since compiled a 10-1 record, having only lost one game in his last 16 starts. He put together a string of eight consecutive victories from May 26th to July 30 th and during that stretch had a streak of 24.0 consecutive scoreless innings. On Monday, he was named as the right-handed starting pitcher for the All-PCL Team.

Hellweg was selected in the 16th round by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 2008 draft out of Florida Community College in Jacksonville, Florida. He was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers last season in a deal that sent Zack Greinke to the Angels. Hellweg made his Major League debut with the Brewers on June 28th of this season.

Others to receive votes for the Pitcher of the Year award include Sonny Gray (Sacramento), Bruce Billings (Sacramento), Michael Wacha (Memphis), and Brian Flynn (New Orleans).

All statistics used are through Tuesday, August 27th .
