Harrisburg Heat News Release
THE WEEK THAT WAS: Veteran Heat star David Bascome scored four goals and Doug Petras made 11 saves in goal, but it was not enough as the Harrisburg Heat lost its 2002-03 season opener by the score of 11-10 to the defending champion Philadelphia KiXX in front of 3,473 fans at the First Union Spectrum on Saturday night. Petras (0-1) took the loss, while Philadelphia's Peter Pappas (1-1) gets the win.
The Heat trailed by scores of 8-2 and 11-4, but Bascome's heroics kept Harrisburg in the game throughout, and David Barbosa's first MISL goal, at 9:51 of the fourth to finish a 2-on-1 with Chris Morman, brought the Heat to within one at 11-10. But the defending champs buckled down defensively and held onto the win, even with Martin Hernandez on as the sixth attacker for the game's final minute.
Midfielder Marco Coria recorded two assists (both on Bascome goals) in his first Heat game, and rookie midfielder Horacio Robledo, making his professional indoor debut, assisted on Bascome's third-quarter restart goal.
Harrisburg played without midfielder Marco "Chikis" Lopez and defenders Oswaldo Medina and Francisco Rodriguez, all awaiting immigration clearance. The Heat hopes to have the trio available for the coming weekend.
BASCOME SNAGS WEEKLY HONORS: In recognition of his four-goal outburst on Saturday, the MISL has named David Bascome the league's Offensive Player of the Week.
Not only did David Bascome's efforts almost single-handedly carry the Heat on Saturday (he accounted for 80% of his club's offense), but the 32-year old Bermudan's four goals are the most in one game by a Heat player since Gino DiFlorio scored four in a 24-16 loss to Kansas City on March 17, 2001. Heat players scored only three hat tricks all of last season: one by Bascome, and two by current KiXX defender Matt Knowles.
The award marks only the third time in Bascome's illustrious career that he has garnered weekly honors. No Heat player won Offensive Player of the Week honors last season; the last Heater to win the award was DiFlorio, on March 5, 2001.
THIS WEEK FOR THE HEAT: DATE VENUE OPPONENT KICKOFF Fri, October 11 San Diego Sports Arena San Diego Sockers 10:05 p.m. EST Sat, October 12 Reunion Arena Dallas Sidekicks 8:05 p.m. EST
The Heat will face a pair of proud old franchises for the first time this weekend, traveling to San Diego to face the Sockers on Friday (10:05 p.m. Eastern) and continuing on to Dallas to take on the Sidekicks on Saturday (8:05 p.m. Eastern). Both games can be heard on 1460 The Ticket, as well as on www.heatsoccer.com.
FAMILIAR FOES: While the Heat has never faced either of this weekend's opponents, there will be plenty of friendly handshakes in San Diego and Dallas. New Heat coach Erich Geyer rose to prominence with the Sockers, first winning four titles (two in the NASL and two in the MISL) with the club as a player from 1981-85, and three more championships as the team's assistant coach from 1989-92.
Renato Pereira is also familiar with San Diego, having scored 16 goals and 23 points during the 2001 WISL season with the Sockers.
And on Saturday, Heat midfielders Marco Lopez and Marco Coria will be receiving championship rings in a pregame ceremony at Reunion Arena in Dallas. Coria contributed 13 goals and 25 points in the Sidekicks' 2001 WISL title run, while Lopez scored 1 goal and 4 points in 7 games for Dallas last season.
