Fayetteville Guard News Release
Fayetteville, NC The Fayetteville HEAT has signed two local athletes to its practice camp, which commences March 6. The HEAT, the area's newest professional indoor football team, will kick-off its inaugural season on April 2 at the Crown Coliseum.
"We have been very pleased with our try-out camps," said Head Coach Terry Smith. "These camps have enabled us to sign some excellent football players. Just as importantly, they are all very fine people who we can be proud of, and that was one of the most important considerations in our selections."
Twenty-one year old, wide receiver Trenton Taylor will be one of 40 players reporting to camp. Taylor graduated from Hope Mills' South View Senior High in 2000. From there he went to East Carolina where he played wide receiver and halfback for two years. He continued his college play at the University of Charleston, in Charleston, West Virginia.
"Being a football player, it's a player's dream to be a professional football player," Taylor said. "I want to thank the coaches and the Fayetteville HEAT for giving me this opportunity."
Another player locals might be familiar with is former Methodist College offensive lineman Jonathan Byrd. This Maysville native played four seasons as starter offensive guard for one of the top offensive lines in the USA South Athletic conference.
"I'm enthusiastic to add to my football career with Fayetteville," 21 year-old Byrd said.
With one more combine to go, Smith is anticipating a strong rooster for the 2005 season.
"I am certain that the City of Fayetteville and Cumberland County will be very proud of all of them," Smith said.
