Hawgs name defensive coordinator

Daytona Beach Hawgs News Release

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Daytona Beach Hawgs are keeping things in the family. Head Coach/General Manager Ervin Bryson announced today the addition of his brother, Monterey Evans, to his coaching staff as defensive coordinator.

"Nothing like a sibling rivalry for motivation,'' Bryson said. "Monterey is a defensive wizard and complements what I do on offense. We're another step close to a complete package."

Evans was an offensive standout during his collegiate playing days at Wingate University, earning all conference honors as a wide receiver his junior year. He made the transition to defense during his stints as an assistant coach at Garinger High School in Charlotte, N.C., and with Bryson at the Winston-Salem Energy as well as the semi-pro ranks.

"My passion has become defense,'' Evans said. "I'm looking forward to working with Ervin again and building a championship quality program"

So how competitive are the brothers?

"Very competitive,'' Evans said. "Practices are going to be very interesting because he's not going to like it when my defense is kicking his offense's butt."

Evans joins a staff that includes former New York Giant and Tampa Bay Buc Leon Bright, Chad Rhodes and Marcus Pearson.

The Hawgs open their inaugural National Indoor Football League season March 19 on the road against the Lakeland Thunderbolts. The home opener is March 24 against the New Jersey Xtreme. Season tickets are available by calling the Ocean Center at (386) 254-4545. For sponsorship packages, contact (386) 257-9890.
