Harrisburg surrenders franchise-record point total
Harrisburg, PA - The Harrisburg Heat led 11-6 at one point in the second quarter, but a 23-2 run by the Kansas City Comets led to disaster, as the Comets downed the Heat by the score of 29-17 in front of 3,782 fans at the Farm Show Arena on Saturday night. The 29 points allowed by the Heat is a single-game franchise record, breaking the old mark set in a 28-13 loss in Cleveland on January 10, 1999. With the loss, the Heat falls to 10-30 on the season.
After the Comets assumed a 4-2 lead by sandwiching 2gps from Ato Leone (8:00 of the first) and Nino DaSilva (11:21) around a Matt Knowles deuce at 8:32 for the Heat, Harrisburg rang off seven straight points, using a Knowles penalty kick at 13:42, a Matt Tanzini 3pg at 14:29, and a Nick Corneli 2pg 52 seconds into the second to take a 9-4 lead. K.C.'s Vlatko Andonovski and Harrisburg's Eric Kvello traded 2pgs at 1:41 and 6:58 of the second, respectively, to make it 11-6 in favor of the Heat. After that, the Comets were off to the races.
Beginning with Alex Zotinca's 3pg at 8:13 of the second, Kansas City scored 11 unanswered points to take a 17-11 lead by the 9:11 mark of the third. Corneli's second 2pg, at 9:32 of the third, temporarily halted the rout, but the Comets returned to their scoring binge by scoring twelve more unanswered points before Joey Murtagh tallied consolation 2pgs at 13:53 and 14:33 of the fourth.
Kansas City keeper Chris Damico (13 saves) was the beneficiary of the offensive explosion, while Doug Petras (15 saves) suffered the loss, playing the entire 60 minutes in net for the Heat. MISL leading scorer Dino Delevski finished with a pair of 2pgs and three assists for seven points, and Nino DaSilva (two 2pgs, two assists) and Dorin Zotinca (three 2pgs) tallied six points apiece. Nick Corneli led Harrisburg with five points (two 2pgs, assist).
