TONIGHT The Stockton Heat complete a difficult three game road trip in four day stretch this afternoon against San Jose. Stockton and San Jose both played last night and both fell as the Reign held off the Barracuda 3-2 while the Heat surrendered three, third period goals in a 5-2 loss to Bakersfield.
For the Heat, they are trying to bounce back after losing their second in-a-row, just the third time that's happened all season long, and are trying to get their first road win since December 17 in San Diego.
Stockton is winless in their last five games away from Stockton Arena, one away from tying an all-time long of six games on the road without a win that occurred from February 5 to March 4 of the 2015-16 season.
LAST TIME VS. SAN JOSE A day after Christmas the Heat and Barracuda met up at the SAP Center with Marcus Sorenson scoring just 1:25 into the game and Nikita Jevpalovs scoring moments later. Mark Jankowski scored to pull within one to end the period and Morgan Klimchuk scored his 10th of the year in the second, only to see Barclay Goodrow score to put San Jose back on top after two.
A big Austin Carroll goal tied things up in the third on the first shot Mantas Armalis would face with Troy Grosenick leaving the game sick to send it to OT, however Nikolay Goldobin scored 2:25 into the extra frame for the 4-3 San Jose win.
WHO TO WATCH With his team leading 12th goal of the season, let's keep it with Morgan Klimchuk as the man to watch tonight as he'll have to get going offensively for the Heat to escape with a win.
And the good news is Klimchuk has played well against San Jose historically speaking. Last year he had 2 goals and 2 assists in 9 games against the Barracuda he's added a goal and 2 assists in 3 games played, bringing his grand total to 3 goals and 4 assists for 7 points in 12 games against San Jose.
Plus, the way Klimchuk has been scoring as of late are the kind of goals you need to get to bust out of slumps. The "go to the net" and "look for a rebound" strategy has paid off for the 28th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
HEY NOW, YOU'RE AN ALL-STAR Mark Jankowski is set to follow in the footsteps that Derek Grant walked last year as the second ever Heat player to be named to the AHL All-Star game.
Jankowski is tied for the team lead in points, tied-sixth among rookie skaters in the AHL. He is one of 13 first-year players to receive the All-Star nod and one of six among the Pacific Division team. Since 1995, 93% of All-Star Game participants have gone on to compete in the NHL, which bodes well for Jankowski as he made his NHL debut with Calgary back on November 28.
A day after being named to the All-Star game, the Heat's star centerman scored the OT game winner just 1:04 into the extra session, his second game winner of the season.
DEVANE STAYS SCORCHING HOT Jamie Devane has been red hot for the Heat this season and now has 4 goals and 5 assists for 9 points in 19 games this season. Last night, he scored a big goal to tie the game up just 1:02 after Stockton surrendered a power-play tally and for the big forward, it was his seventh point in his last 10 games (3-4-7).
He's just two points behind tying his career best of 11 points picked up with the Milwaukee Admirals last year, which he accomplished in 62 games played. N
ot only that but Devane has matched his career long of a three-game point streak twice this season, his second and third such streak of his now five-year career.
SATURDAY IN SAN JOSE Stockton is 2-1-1-0 vs. San Jose this season and they'll be playing their fourth of six games at the SAP Center this afternoon and all-time have only won a single road game in San Jose. In an interesting and slightly related stat, Stockton has only played SJ once on a Saturday, a win to open the season.
The Heat are 8-1-1-0 on Saturdays and 3-1-1-0 on road games on Saturdays.
INTERESTING FACT Stockton has surrendered three goals in back-to-back games in the final period going back to Wednesday in San Diego and again on Friday in Bakersfield. While the Heat's goal differential is plus-16, the Heat have been outscored 36-29 in the final period of games this season and outshot by 28 shots.
