Harrisburg Heat News Release
Philadelphia, PA - Veteran Heat star David Bascome scored four goals and Doug Petras made 11 saves in goal, but it was not enough as the Harrisburg Heat lost its 2002-03 season opener by the score of 11-10 to the defending champion Philadelphia KiXX in front of 3,473 fans at the First Union Spectrum on Saturday night. Petras (0-1) took the loss, while Philadelphia's Peter Pappas (1-1) gets the win.
Philadelphia's Pat Morris provided the first quarter's only scoring at 6:32, when he pounced on a loose ball in the goalkeeper arc and popped a shot over Petras for a 2-0 KiXX lead.
With KiXX player/coach Omid Namazi off for a tripping penalty, the Heat's Marco Coria sent a ball around the right-corner boards and onto the foot of an expectant David Bascome at the far post for a two-point power play goal and a 2-2 tie. Philly's Les Lunsford rifled a loose ball past Petras for a 2pg at 4:07 to make it 4-2, and Gary DePalma gave the hosts a 6-2 lead at 13:11 when he took a long outlet from Pappas and weaved his way just inside the three-point arc before pounding a shot low to Petras' right. Philly led by four at the half.
The Heat was on the power play again when Glenn Carbonara scored a crucial short-handed goal at 1:23 of the third to make it 8-2. Bascome had the answer once more at 11:51 when he one-timed a Horacio Robledo restart feed into the net to make it 8-4 at the end of three quarters.
Don D'Ambra's 3pg at 3:36 of the fourth put Philadelphia comfortably into the driver's seat, 11-4. But the Heat was not done, and neither was Bascome: his third 2pg of the night, at 4:39 off a service from Coria, brought the Heat back to within 11-6. The 32-year old Bermudan then stripped the ball from Carbonara outside the KiXX yellow line and slid a shot under Pappas to make it 11-8 at 9:36. Harrisburg pulled to within 11-10 when David Barbosa finished a two-on-one with Chris Morman at 9:51.
But the KiXX thwarted the Heat's late thrusts, even with Martin Hernandez in as the sixth attacker, and secured the 11-10 win.
