Worcester Bravehearts News Release
Worcester, MA - The Worcester Bravehearts fell 15-2 Saturday night in mercy-rule fashion to the Norwich Sea Unicorns at Fitton Field in the final home game of the Bravehearts' 2022 season.
Norwich moves to 29-33 with the win while the 'Hearts drop to 26-36.
The Sea Unicorns did not trail the entire game. Norwich jumped on top with a five-run first inning. A two-run single by Nick Sturino (Fairfield) would score Ray Leonzi (Fairfield) and Chris Maldonado (Vanderbilt). Sturino came in when Andrew Bianco (New Haven) doubled, and Bianco scored on an error.
The Bravehearts also got on the board in the first. An RBI double by Futures League MVP Gavin Noriega (Bryant) scored Matty Warren (Palm Beach Atlantic).
Norwich scored five more times in the second. Maldonado came home on another single by Sturino, after which a Zac Zyons (Bryant) double brought in Leonzi and Sturino. Noah Plantamuro (Eastern Connecticut State) doubled Zyons home. Ben Jerome (Nichols) then singled in Plantamuro.
Norwich extended the lead further with yet another five-run inning in the fifth. Jerome would score on an RBI single by Maldonado. Maldonado would then score on a double by Sturino. Bianco put an exclamation point on Norwich's night at the plate with a three-run home run that also saw Leonzi and Sturino cross the plate.
Worcester scored again in the bottom of the fifth when an RBI single by Trey Bourque (Skidmore) brought in Mark Darakjy (Northeastern), but that would be all for the Bravehearts, who fell 15-2.
The win went to Norwich reliever Bo Yaworski (Mitchell). In three scoreless innings, Yaworski gave up just one hit and no walks, striking out three. The losing pitcher was Bravehearts starter Sean Scanlon (Holy Cross). Scanlon gave up five runs (four earned) in one inning on five hits and a walk.
The Bravehearts wrap up their 2022 season on the road Sunday afternoon against the Nashua Silver Knights at Holman Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00.
